Default Internet phone

Does anybody, or has anybody tried using a "voip" or wireless internet phone in aircraft equipped with wireless internet? We got a quote for 100k for a new satphone, and we are looking for other options. We are pt. 91 so certification wouldn't matter. Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

I used Skype on an Alaska jet recently even though Gogo says they don't support it. If you have a medium fast connection to the ground and create a hot spot on the jet, you should
be able to use VOIP including Facetime.

I have had passengers use FaceTime while out over the middle of the pacific... Seemed to have okay quality. The big issue is the type of data plan you have. It can get pretty dang expensive pretty quick when you are streaming voice like that if you aren't set up on an unlimited data arrangement.
