Default New COVID Strains - UK and South Africa

Both places are reporting new strains. In the UK, the PM has reported that there is a new strain that is significantly more infectious while not necessarily more fatal. In response, the greater London area is locking down again, and restrictions that were to be relaxed for Christmas in the UK will no longer be. South African researchers say that their new strain *seems* to be more significantly affecting younger people with severe illness that did not have co-morbidities, without being necessarily more infectious.

South Africa: COVID-19: South Africa identifies new coronavirus variant causing surge in infections (msn.com)

Hopefully this turns out to be a non-event like the Denmark/Mink thing. But if not, you heard it here first, folks.

The coronavirus mutates at a slower rate than influenza but it only varies by degree. It DOES mutate. The current mutant strains do not appear to be more lethal, but they do appear to be more infectious allowing faster spread. Thus far, at least, it appears that the mutant strains can potentially still be held in check by the recently approved vaccines.

At least once enough people have either gotten the vaccines or recovered from infection.

Yeah, hopefully that's true (and I'm optimistic it will be) but the UK lockdowns are unfortunately sucky news for all of us. The SA claim seems to be built as much on conjecture as science at this point, but if the average 30-40 year old now has to act like they're 65 that's gonna be a real sumbiatch. Jury is obviously out on that one and some skepticism is warranted, but that's big news if true. Seems like in both cases they think the vaccines will still work, as you said. Big silver lining is that international travel is significantly curtailed, so hopefully if the South Africans are right, it doesn't get to the US before we get to critical mass with vaccination.

Can't get them jabs soon enough...

This along with the 6 allergic reactions to the current vaccine that the media is falling over themselves about will no doubt do wonders for our “recovery”.

CNN today:
“Nurse PASSES out immediately following vaccination.”

”Hospital IMMEDIATELY halts vaccinations (temporarily) after adverse reactions.”

COVID is going to kill me, but not the virus. It’ll be from watching the news and local government work in tandem to self destruct our nation.

And on top of all that, the "enemy" also gets a vote. Worst case scenario - both actually really team up.

Yeah, like f me, 6 of how many 10's if not 100s of thousands worldwide? Stick around for 20 minutes in the doctors office with an epipen nearby - problem solved.

I’ve got to kind of blame the hospital on that one. Probably not a good idea to let a nurse who’s “prone to fainting when she feels pain” do a press conference after vaccination. Hospitals are going to need spokespersons to control messaging. Like airlines have for accidents/incidents.

Perhaps next press conference they can find a nurse that is prone to farting when they feel pain.

I gotta disagree on that point brazil bus. A more virulent, less deadly strain is a good sign and we'd be better letting nature take its course by allowing it to spread. In the cycle of pathogens, this type of mutation acts as a ready made vaccine against the killer strain. This was how we overcame the flu in 1918.
But I know mutants have difficulties overcoming prejudices...
