Mask mandate extension

NBC news reporting that the TSA is considering extending the mask mandate until mid March. This despite a complete lack of definitive scientific data yet regarding the so-called “Omicron” variant.
2/3 of disruptive passenger incidents involve masks. For many US residents the ONLY time they are required to wear a mask is when they chose to fly. Passengers and crew members were told that with the air circulation on aircraft it was safer to fly than to go to buy groceries, yet for most Americans picking up stuff for dinner does NOT require a mask.
On the surface it would appear this has as much to do with the federal government exerting control on one of the few areas they can than anything else.

Whatever.

Like I ‘splain to my kids - I don’t make the rules, I just play the game.

Mask mandate extension

Masks will likely be a permanent thing for air travel until a new regime takes over unfortunately. So many people get the warm and fuzzies of feeling “safer” with the mask on even though they go on with their daily lives without them. AFA is pushing hard for them to be a permanent thing despite their members getting assaulted and berated by pax on a regular basis

So did we win the 100 day mask challenge or what?

Disgusting. I'm really glad I live in Florida where I don't have to worry about anymore of this covid bs other than when I go to work.

DeltaboundRedux 12-01-2021 04:50 PM

I feel like banning men with beards (plus especially hairy women) from planes because their masks don't seal effectively would probably save some lives.

I mean, we are legally required to wear masks on airplanes because of a campaign promise of a politician…kinda hard to separate the two.

EDIT, hopefully we can keep it civil, but unlike a lot of topics discussed here, politics is at the core of this topic.

You bring up a good point. It was FA’s that pushed this agenda. Ironic now that they are the ones bearing the brunt of the abuse. Careful what you ask for.

DeltaboundRedux 12-01-2021 05:01 PM

FWIW, there is supposed to be an announcement tomorrow (Thursday) about new travel rules going into effect.

More Covid tests on the front end and back end of travel, most likely. Self-quarantines of 5-7 days also being discussed.

Mask theatre is the least of the industry's worries. Feel bad for the FA's though. Both for having to wear them all the time and having to deal with compliance issues.

So much for our international recovery. And this for a variant that has yet to to proven more deadly that the original, and according to the South African GP that discovered it probably much less so.

none of that matters. Facts have largely taken a backseat to fear and paranoia in policy decisions handling this so far, why would that change.

SonicFlyer 12-01-2021 05:33 PM

Everything the government does is the result of politics, left, right, or otherwise. Which is why it's best for the government to do as little as possible.

AntiPeter 12-01-2021 05:39 PM

poetic justice?

If an FA is paranoid enough about facemasks to be emotionally and verbally abusive to passengers then maybe they get what they deserve?

Facemasks are totally ineffective at reducing community-wide spread of COVID.

If you're demanding putting a muzzle on kids > 2 years old, you've lost perspective on this virus and policy. Our government is at the moment not capable of untangling the web they now find themselves so trapped.

We passed that off ramp 18 months ago.

Masks are never going away because we let them do this to us.

I told you this almost 2 years ago. When WE decide its enough it ends.

Until then it'll be the Karen's running around screaming "govern me harder, daddy" And they will oblige.

I don’t feel a bit bad for 90% of them. With few exceptions the FA’s I fly with are obnoxious mask nazis, far more then the mandate calls for.
Their union pushing for the mandates continued extension is going to be the hardest to overcome.
They voted for the nonsensical things, they can deal with the fallout.

I find myself leaning towards this opinion. I commute and we DH frequently on the 717. I’ve seen quite a few FA’s that are really obnoxious about it. Some of the worst are the male FA’s. Heard one telling a passenger In a very condescending voice he had to replace the mask between “sips and nibbles”. Helluva way to treat someone essentially paying your salary.
I foresee the pushback getting worse. I am seeing more and more pax not wearing masks in the airports. Nobody, other than at the TSA checkpoint, is telling them to put it on. I’ve even seen gate agents allow passengers past the podium and onto the jetway without a mask. Next point of contact was the flight crew, with predictable results.
Question is when is the mask more of a threat to the flight than what it is supposedly protecting us against? How frequent do these altercations have to become before common sense can finally take hold? I suspect we may just find out in the next few months.

Hey how'd that Russian collusion narrative work out?

My wife and I non revved, and at the end of the flight, my wife stood up to walk off, and in the process her mask fell below her nose. Big whup. The FA jumped my wife's ***.

And the best part was what she said....she addressed *me* in a really condescending tone, "Sir! YOU need to tell HER to put her mask back on!"

As the saying goes, theres a right way and there's a wrong way.

There isn't a right way to tell someone to wear a mask. It's all wrong.

Fortunately, the rest of the world and most especially Asia seems to have wised up in the last few years.

If you happen to pay attention, these are recent positive developments...

- Widespread banning of PRC produced 5G infrastructure systems
- Taiwan developing advanced subs (don't need nukes, their problem is local)
- Oz developing advanced nuclear subs (do need nukes, they have a lot of water to cover)
- Oz and Japan ramping up defense spending dramatically
- Japan moving away from pacifist military policies
- Formation of Quad coalition (India, US, OZ, Japan)

So yeah, it's a problem but at least some folks are waking up now. I was really worried five years ago (with access to classified intel), I'm not as worried now.

As a bit of a military news geek I did notice the submarine procurement plans of Austrailia and Taiwan and Japan's lean-forward posture militarily.

It's a shame, though I'm a guard guy, and pro military, I wish we didnt have such a threat to deal with so the american taxpayer could save some money.

But like I posted above, there are very real signs that China is a malevolent actor in and outwards. I don't see how that can be denied with a straight face anymore.

I am amused (and saddened) that a large percentage of newscasters continue to mispronounce the Greek letter Omicron. Even after their medical person on video pronounces it correctly, they still pronounce it incorrectly.

Even the President pronounced it “omni-chron“.

Mods (Rick) feel free to delete my post but then please also delete the insulting post by AntiPeter. I'm not gonna go and read the forum rules but I understand it's not allowed to criticize the POTUS or talk party politics so I would hope an immature and disrespectful post such as the above which only drives people apart instead of trying to understand why others may think and act differently is not allowed either. I have noticed this before on here. A lot. People forget their manners when they post online. I expect better from aviation professionals.
