I'd chalk that up to most likely having a very special wingnut in a leadership position.
Not a trend yet. I'll be the first to protest vehemently if mandates come back, but this isn't it and I don't think it's going to happen. I'm fine with hospitals.

Anything Covid-related has always been driven by media hype and the accompanying public hysteria. When you look back at the last 3+ years of news stories, it's astounding the hyperbole and outright falsehoods that made it into the headlines. "Morgues bringing in freezer trucks to store bodies!" "Hospitals at max capacity!" etc etc.
And now, subjectively at least, it seems like we've gotten an uptick in Covid-related coverage, right as Summer is ending. After a summer that was gloriously Covid-free, all of a sudden it's in the news again in the Fall, as if it's a TV show returning for another season.
It's hard not to be suspect of the timing. After perusing various news sites for a bit, I think this New York Times article has all we need to know:
Oh no! Holy Sheet! Covid is back! The First Lady has it, fer chrissakes!
Phew! That's a relief. Thank goodness the Experts could chime in! Sounds like we should be in the clear. But, what should I, as an obedient citizen and NYT reader, do going forward?
There it is! The money shot.
We get a sudden uptick in Covid coverage, complete with the First Lady being infected. However, in a break from the past, the coverage is soft-pedaled. "Covid is back, but it's not that bad. However, now that we have your attention, did you know the new vaccines are coming out next week? Why don't you plan on getting yournext booster yearly Covid shot?"
The media coverage of Covid over the past three weeks seems to be nothing more than a well-executed ad campaign for people to go out and get their shots.

Jill Biden, the first lady, tested positive for Covid-19 on Monday. Governor Kathy Hochul of New York has announced that the state will send high-quality masks and rapid tests to school districts that request them. Already, schools in Kentucky and Texas have closed, citing widespread respiratory illness among students and staff.
The coronavirus is in the air again. Literally.
The coronavirus is in the air again. Literally.
.........in interviews, experts offered reassurances that the country will not see a return to the nightmarish scenarios of previous years.
The Biden administration has said that rather than periodic boosters, Americans now should expect to receive a single Covid shot each fall, much like the annual flu vaccine. This year’s Covid vaccines may be available as early as next week, when advisers to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention are scheduled to review data and issue recommendations for use.

And thus is the conspiracy theorist paradox: That [insert target here] is both woefully incompetent and expertly executing a global master plan at the same time.
