What he said. Delta Air Lines is probably more interested in your ability to read, comprehend, and follow directions than if you totaled a car in bad weather. I can't believe this is really up for discussion. At first I really thought you were trolling but now I'm just dumbfounded. If you didn't get a ticket there's nothing to report. My understanding is that the question asks for "infractions". You didn't have an infraction, you had a wreck. Now if you want to discuss this in a potential interview as "something I learned from" go for it but I would absolutely NOT list it on the app simply because it's not the question they are asking, and will probably get your app skipped over in the pile.

Hello all:
I have a question about the driving record section of the Delta app and would like some advice. To make a long story short, I recently totaled my car while driving on the interstate. It had just started to rain, cars were slowing down ahead of me, and I reached up and hit the brakes. The car hydroplaned, and spun out of control and hit the sidewall of an elevated expressway. I was lucky for 2 reasons, one - I was not hurt, and two - I did not hit anyone else. Just had a damaged car and ego. I ended up calling the police and when they arrived they basically said I could either get a ticket for careless driving (or something like that) or sign a piece of paper which said I did not need a police report and I can go on my merry way with no ticket, since no other vehicles were involved. I chose the second option. My question is how do I report this on the app? I want to make it clear that I do not want to hide anything. I am having trouble coming up with what to put down for this accident, and how much detail should be entered. Thank you in advance. JL If you do decide to list it, then I suggest explicitly stating that it was an accident and not a violation. For example, in the App under the violation column, just state "accident", list the date, city, county; and under the description simply/briefly say what you explained above - you were in an accident, no one was injured and no ticket/violation was issued. This will clear your conscience if you're worried about it and will show that there really isn't an issue. That said, this is just my $0.02; I'm not a traffic attorney, however I did stay at a Holiday Inn Express once ;) |
Thanks everybody for all the responses. It's a huge help.

This is an interview to become one of 14,000 cogs in a massive operation. It is not a personal counseling session, and you're not in the trust tree with family and friends. JMHO.

Being distracted and slamming on the brakes hard enough to cause an uncontrollable spin/crash on a crowded highway full of cars who all managed to control their vehicles is 100% your fault. Be careful how you describe things. It reeks of blame deflection and unwillingness to accept responsibility for ones mistakes. |

"Hydroplaning"..... implies it wasn't your fault. As if the conditions themselves caused this and there was little you could do.

well that, and mentioning the hydroplaning thingy would probably make you not a good candidate for the 88/737.... yuk,yuk...

JL....if there was no official/legal record of the event....why would you bother 'reporting' it at all?
No citation? No impairment? no arrest? No resulting medical impairment?nada, zip, zero. Non-event so far as employment applications. So you wrecked your car? So what? Unless it was the 5th time in 3 years....I'm not worried about flying with you. Could make a good 'oh ****!' story though.....like some of our hangar talk events.:) So am I missing something? Or does the application now have a box for full and total 'self disclosure'? If it does I am dang lucky it appeared after I got hired.....and that little episode in the P.I.......:D |

I want to report it on the app. I screwed up on the road, and I learned from it. This was a near death experience. Not listing it to me would be dishonest. That is not the question here. I'm looking for advice on how to list it properly.
The app asks what violation is it....Would it be careless driving? Wreckless? Failure to maintain control of vehicle? Not really sure. Do I put down that I totaled my car? Or wait to explain that in an interview if I were to get selected? It also asks if I was convicted....I believe that would be a no since I did not receive a ticket or go to court. There is a record of this happening. Like I said the officer made me sign a form that said I did not need a police report to give to my insurance company. I specifically asked him if there was any way to trace this piece of paper, and he said that there may be some record that he assisted a vehicle that was stalled on the side of the road but that is it. Also, there is obviously record with my insurance company of this event happening as well. I do not believe that airlines have access to an applicants insurance records, but basically what I am saying is that there is some sort of a paper trail that exists. |
