I use Project Fi and have been pretty pleased with it. I switched from iOS and it took a little bit to get used to Android, but I do like the Pixel just fine.

I've generally gotten better speeds internationally than t-mobile, but service in China has been very poor, and due to the Great Firewall you can't use wifi for any google serivces (problematic on an Android).

Domestically I have no problems with signal/reception (I do live in a city). If you have Comcast/Xfinity you can set it up to always log onto any xfinity wifi router which saves on data usage. Not sure if other companies do this. The phone also automatically logs onto known public wifi networks. This has kept my phone bills under $40 a month.

They also extend the free WiFi on Gogo to the whole flight. Data passes can be purchased overseas to increase speeds to LTE temporarily.

Old info...was two years ago..have had FI for several years..it's changed lots...
Haven't seen the "upgrade" screen for a long time...just the "welcome to xxx".
Is now full speed...and multiple networks...and not always T-Mobile affiliated networks anymore.
Not perfect, but with data the same $$ anyway, if you are a light data user, and are ok with the limited phones on Google-fi, namely the Pixel series (regular, XL, 2 and 2) and the Moto X4, it's a great choice internationally.
Tip...
Use the hangot dialer when international to use data, not minutes for calls, so ZERO per minute call charges, only data.
