Default Canada crew rules

I haven’t had a YVR layover in ages. Can I carry a six-pack of local beer through Canada and US pre-clear, in my normal bag or backpack? Not duty free, just from a local brewery, if I find one I like. I don’t remember if they do the 3 ounce thing. Thanks!

Seriously? Why bother? Is local Canadian brew important enough to you to get your name on the Customs (both countries!) bad boy list?
If so, you need to rethink your priorities.

So long as you declare it I don’t see how you’d possibly make a naughty list. Worst case they say not allowed and you lose it.

Beer is my priority. I always bring back local swill to share with my neighbor. OK, let me rephrase my question. Can I bring a 12 ounce toothpaste through in my bag, or does it need to be 3 oz?

As an M88 driver I can only speak for YYZ layovers. As long as it is in your bag it’s fine. If it’s outside of your bag, like a water bottle, it has to go in your bag. Then it’s fine.

Over the years I observed many crew members bringing copious quantities of beer back from Canada. Never any issues (assuming your company doesn't have a "crew in possession" policy).

If you're based and live in SLC...

The actual crew members allowance undeclared is 1 liter open for consumption. Anything else going into the US needs to be declared. Most just list Spirits and they waive you through.

They don't sell Molson at your local bottle shop, eh?
