Seattle Council Proposal: No Retirement Age

For the January 17th council 54 meeting (Seattle), there is a resolution to direct “the Delta MEC Chairman to endorse the elimination of the mandatory retirement age for commercial pilots so long as they pass required mental and physical health exams...”

I won’t post the entire resolution publicly, other than the language above. However, the amended agenda for the Jan 17th meeting IS NOT available on the Council 54 page of DALPA’s website for you to verify. I hope it is updated soon so any Delta pilot with an interest in the topic of retirement can personally read the resolution.

Nope nope nope. Might need to drop a trip to attend the local meeting to oppose this one.

Read it here first...."If it happens...Just Deal with it"...."Life is life and life's not fair"....."reduce your standard of living"...."you have 15 years or more to prepare"...yada...yada...yada

Nobody mandates that you stay any longer than you want to...it will be voluntary.

This too will turn into "who's ox is getting gored". Some will claim victim-hood and the other side will use all the arguments about the "money grab of old farts" against you.

Oh .....and.... it will never happen. Time to untwist your collective panties

Yup, it'll never happen but somebody has the audacity to try to make my union work against my interests so this should get all the attention it does.

As if we have any say.

This right here...

If they follow other proposals, they are going to start increasingly intrusive medical exams at age 40. This reminds me of when the USAF started requiring treadmills on all their fighter pilots. They got a massive number of false positives with no actual true positives that wouldn’t have been detected by just the regular ECGs. The reason they knew they were false positives is because they did cardiac catheterizations on all of them. Eventually even the Air Force relented.

Cognitive testing has an even higher rate of false positives than ECGs. Think about having to do a Hogan at every exam. And if you score any different than you did last, you fail.

Be careful what you wish for...

Most of those wishing for it have little to nothing to lose. So what if there are ridiculous new standards? If you're already near 65 then its just bonus round time anyway.

Did the fishing season just open in Seattle?

Not to be argumentative but I'm sure there are other pilots that are part of this union that may have a different opinion than you......

Personally I will be retiring at 65 and that will be it.

It’s obviously a stunt, and a foolish one at that. IIRC a LEC cannot direct the MEC to do anything.

Hey old guys - Way to get the young guys on your side.

Once again, confusing tactics with strategy.

and they forgot they were in 2020

I'd might be ok with it - if they went over to the FO seat.

In two years everyone will deny anyone introduced such a motion like so many other issues.

This isn't a resolution.

It is the plot of the next Star War franchise.

Wouldn't this have to be approved by the FAA, not the Delta MEC Chairman? To become law?

Shhh

Also, a Local Council resolution cannot direct the MEC, much less the entire Association. But don't tell them that either and when they write 2019 in the logbook, let it go.

Ironically, for their resolution to go anywhere, guess who has to fix it for them?

Actually it was changed by Congress and would need to be changed by Congress again as I understand it. This would also go against a ALPA BOD vote that put it in the strategic plan to oppose raising the age from 65.

20 guys at a meeting can’t by themselves create this sort of change. It could get the ball rolling on updated polling of the entire pilot group to see if sentiment has changed, but I don’t think they are are gonna like what they find.

Maybe it's a backdoor to a defunct pension.....now you just work till you qualify for LTD and since there is no retirement age...you just collect LTD until you die????

crewdawg 01-08-2020 08:58 AM

What noone really wants to talk about is what if the FAA enacts age 67 but it still isn't recognized by AESA/ICAO/etc...? Knowing that not all old guys are necessarily senior, how does bidding/awarding of reserve trips avoid abrogating seniority. In Canada, >65 can't be Captains... All those WB Captains going to jump down to a more predominately domestic fleet...potentially as an FO?

No one talks about it because it's a hypothetical embedded within a hypothetical.

The amended agenda is available on DALPA for those with access who care to view the resolution for themselves.

Log in to DALPA and get to the Council 54 page.

Select “Meeting Notice”

After it loads, select the link at the top of the notice “click here for mobile version”

The amended agenda contains links to the four resolutions to be voted on during the January 17th meeting, including the resolution discussed here.

Curious when a resolution is brought forward at the LEC, does it just get voted on by that LEC or does it go to the MEC? I read somewhere that all LEC's are voting on this resolution...

80ktsClamp 01-08-2020 04:31 PM

The same resolution has been posted on the agenda for ATL C44 meeting next Friday the 17th.

Where are the agendas? I can’t find them on the reworked ALPA site.

If I were at the council meeting, from the floor I would vote to approve the resolution with a simple change to the word “elimination”. In its place the word “confirmation”.

Follow-up question, does the membership get to vote on this or just the LEC reps?

Brent (C44 chair) gave the heads up that it was put in properly to be on the agenda on Facebook. I'll be there.

Should this follow the polling pattern in general, it will die an appropriately horrible death.
