Carrying the Fire by Michael Collins

Pretty well regarded as one of the best astronaut books, It’s written by the Command Module Pilot of Apollo 11 who is one of the better writers I’ve ever read. Not overly technical and written like you’re sitting there having a beer with the guy. One of the first books I ever read about the Apollo missions and it gave me a profound respect for what these men did in our finest hour. It’s got it all: patriotism, pilot ******, space. Seriously, pick it up.

For a little sci-fi action, the Way of Kings by*******Sanderson is phenomenal. I also quite liked his earlier Mistborn series as well. Robert Jordan’s Wheel of Time is stunning but he is very, very descriptive and the books… well they’re more of tomes than books.

The Martian was a great quick read for me. Never saw the movie but I really enjoyed the technical writing and the research Weir put in.

Edit: ok I guess I’m not allowed to say the name of the author of Way of Kings. Must be some big non fiction purist mods here 😂

I am reading A Confederacy of Dunces now. If you heard someone cackling down the hall in a hotel room, it might have been me reading John Kennedy Toole.
Walker Percy wrote the introduction to Toole’s book. If you’re into Southern Catholic writers, Percy and Flannery O’Connor top the list.

For you Fox News nuts that don’t understand the left…and you CNN crazies that don’t understand the right, I can’t recommend this book enough. It does a great job explaining why people take sides on everything and feel they are right. The writing flows very well, it’s balanced, and it’ll change your thinking (might relieve some stress, too).

I love this thread, because the basic format is:

“Here’s a book I recommend”

And sometimes

“Here’s a very brief summary”

Show me what a man reads, and I’ll know who the man is. Just the posting of book titles is an excellent insight into the collective mind of our pilot group. It is a reminder not everyone at Delta has the same opinions, and good manners in the cockpit require us to acknowledge that fact.

It sure would be nice if it could stay that way. (Yes, this post violates that plea, and I won’t repeat it here)
