Perhaps we could be what EK was to the 380 program 15 or so years ago, to the 330-900 program. No?

We already our the savior of the program. The A380 sold better however. Had the A380 been more of a success I suspect the A3330-900 would already be dead. Two failed programs would look very bad.

AirAsia X is in deep financial trouble and may never get a single airframe. The rest of the 300 orders are mostly smoke and mirrors and also may never be delivered. Airbus needed about 1000 orders at this point and might have 80 real orders. The big question is will the A330-900 program survive at all.

If its that bad then I could see them offering eye watering discounts just to keep the line open long enough for an orderly shut down. But do we really want another orphan fleet?

Nevermind as I just realized that was inadvertently rhetorical.

Anyway its just concerning because there has to be more to fleet composition than capex.
