GS Question

Evening all, I considered asking the union this but I know they’re swamped and I’m probably not due any restitution anyway so a couple of quick GS questions for a guy relatively new to the GS game after sitting international awhile.

1. ARCOS called this morning with a pair of trips for tomorrow. Said pairings 2, batch size 2. Figured I’m guaranteed to get one of them right? Nope both went out to senior peeps. Does batch size not mean what I think it means?

2. An hour later phone rings again. Short notice GS, how soon can you be at the airport type thing. Say yes I’ll take it and get awarded it. I shave my luxurious reserve beard, put on the double breasted horse blanket and head to the airport. Halfway there, the dang thing no-ops. I assume I’m not due any pay or payback days? Also if I put my name back in the hat am I now at GS#1 priority or GS#2 since I technically have already been awarded one?

Thanks in advance! Feeling a little miffed but wouldn’t be nearly as ****ed if I hadn’t had to shave the beard :D

GS Question

ARCOS continues to call until the awarded pilot acknowledges. Sounds like that’s what happened on the first one. Second one, are you reg or res? If reg, look at PWA 23.U.6 for pay treatment. If res, no soup. I assume res based on what you said. But a no op gs does not count as a gs…so you’d go back to getting gs #1 if this was your first one. You could try calling scheduling asking for suit up pay since you were on the way to the airport, but it is towards the guarantee

Someone senior to you probably changed their mind and put a gs in for it during your callout window.. In your 2nd part, you will receive single pay and credit for the trip you were awarded on the greenslip that nooped as a lineholder(not sure about reserve). You are still on your #1 greenslip

If that were the case, he would have still been awarded the trip. ARCOS doesn’t loop back until AFTER a batch completes.

“ARCOS called this morning with a pair of trips for tomorrow. Said pairings 2, batch size 2“

I need to get up to speed on ARCOS. Does this mean call #1 had two offerings and each had two pilots offered the trips? Both senior to the OP which is why he didn’t get an award?

You need to go to daily trip coverage and see who got the awards. If it was a guy junior to you call CS and ask for a supervisor. You might also plug the trip into the legality calculator before you call. Strange things can happen with rest legalities on reserve. If you can’t talk to CS turn it into the union. They are about a month out on reviews but you will get paid.

That’s kind of what I was thinking happened. If that is what happened, it’s not the natural meaning of the term batch size. I thought 2 pairings with a pot of 2 people meant we each get one. 2 people for this pairing and 2 for the other one yet still only a batch size of 2 would be a tad misleading IMO.

No, the batch size of 2 is correct (1 pilot per rotation 8+ hours to report). All the batch size means is the number of pilots called per callout window. If a pilot volunteers for the trip, once the callout window closes for that pilot's batch 2 things will happen. First, it will award the pilot the trip and open up that pilot's acceptance window. However, in case that pilot changes his mind, ARCOS will also immediately call the next batch of pilots. So yes it is possible to be in a batch where the number of pilots = the number of trips and still not be awarded a trip.

Also, another nuance is that the batch size is set and does not change even as trips are awarded in the batch. So if there are 10 trips with a batch size of 10, and over time 9 of those trips get awarded and acknowledged, ARCOS will still call 10 pilots at a time as it tries to cover that last single trip.

My brain hurts but thanks for the response. Certainly some nuanced layers to ARCOS and I can’t be the only one who learned something new. Now if you’ll excuse me there’s some kids I need to yell at to get off my lawn. While I’m at it I’m going to regale them with stories of the good old days when crew scheds would just call me with a green slip in the pre ARCOS past.:D
