Widgey the Widget!

I’m just wondering in what scenario does Delta even need a mascot??

Could be like a gremlin, something goes south, blame it on "Widgey.'

ebl14 05-12-2023 08:20 PM

How about Pat O’Neil Riley?

Phuz 05-13-2023 04:59 AM

What are Widgey's pronouns?

Do NOT send it out into the terminal during an epic IROPS or it might end up a cathartic punching bag for the customers.

It can high five the entire half-mile-long line for the help desk at JFK the next time we have a staffing or IT meltdown. That, plus our hat wearing, will improve our NPS score from those customers and strengthen the Brand.

DeltaboundRedux 05-13-2023 05:48 AM

This has the look and feel of a company bloated with extra departments looking for reasons to justify their jobs.

When thinking of iconic airline corporate logos, what first comes to mind is PanAm, KLM, Alaskan (Inuit), Lufthansa, United, and Swiss Air.

Some aren't even around anymore, but many can still picture the logo. That's good marketing.

Velvet. And similar kool-aid events.

It’s a little silly, but in the big scheme of things, this is less than budget dust.

Yes , widgey can go around to all the gates during delays and cancellations due to ATC staffing , Delta pilot staffing and Endeavor Captain shortage/Attrition . Widgey can do magic tricks , Juggle bowling pins and hand out lollipops to the little ones to sooth over all the angry passengers .

Can I audition for the Job as Widgey ? Could be a good side gig if I could charge 100,000 per appearance 😂. I can sing , dance and play the strata castor guitar.

It gives people reason to complain. Because pilots complain. About everything. Self included (at times).

United completely botched their logo in the merger by not going with the Tulip. The Continental globe is garbage. Would have been better off with the meatball.

The Widget is pretty dang iconic. TBH.

SonicFlyer 05-13-2023 11:34 AM

DL already has a mascot, Dusty:

I liked both logos. The golden Continental globe was classy. Not a fan of the new blue one though.

Don't forget Sandy Saver!

Once apon a time there was Owly Bird and Early Bird with their wings around Yellow Bird. Was looking bad for Yellow Bird.

Iconic in Georgia….nothing can touch Rhapsody in Blue. That’s iconic.

To deny that the Delta Widget is iconic at least across the US shows a bit of cognitive dissonance.

Very few people of the traveling public remember that anymore, and those that do don’t remember what airline it went with.

I'm a pilot and really didn't know what the widget even was until I was prepping to interview here. Guarantee less than 10% (honestly probably zero) of my non-aviation friends would know what it is. I think the old United tulips might be more recognizable.. and, like a previous poster said, Rhapsody in Blue for sure is iconic.

I agree nobody outside Delta knows what a “widget “ is just like nobody knows what a “tulip” is but if you show somebody the Delta symbol - they associate it with the brand. BTW never heard of a tulip until your post.

I just flew United a lot as a kid...and was pretty aviation nerdy then. That's the only reason I know that.

DeltaboundRedux 05-16-2023 04:43 PM

Not going to google "tulips/airlines", but "Rhapsody in Blue" was definitely iconic for United. For people of a certain age. When there was a semblance of common cultural heritage in Delta's domestic markets other than just Star Wars, Harry Potter, and for the oldsters, Lord of the Rings and Marvel Movie #245, "The Infinite Sequel"

Googling "most popular song in America", I came across Morgan Wallen's "One Thing at a Time". Never heard of the artist, or the song. (It's catchy enough. But I'm not in my 20's or 30's anymore)

(Songs about substance addiction/abuse, personal character failures and arson probably aren't good tunes for an airline, however)

Almost like advertising isn't something pilots know diddly squat about? But, you know...put the hat on the suitcase, 'cuz you're smart.

Delta is [currently] an iconic brand. I'd love to see a tune known round the world attached to the adverts. I'm not sure that's still possible.

(Partial to Aaron Copland's Appalachian Spring for mass consumption, but that's probably old people thinking. Even just the basic "Fanfare for the Common Man")

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q4Qt0AIRK-0&t=773s

Head to the 13:00 min mark or so for the climax. If you're that sort.

Fanfare for the Common Man?

My God. It's perfect.

This. No one outside delta knows we call it a widget. If you show it to someone though, they know exactly what company it belongs to.

Yeah, I truly want to see that. And by that I mean Widgey attempting to remove said bowling pin from a certain orifice.
