If anyone is reading this and thinking "oh you wusses, the cockpit isn't that loud": You already have some permanent hearing loss. They're all loud. It's fatiguing, you can't hear each other well. You WILL be more tired after a long day of flying without a good ANC headset.

And let me tell you, tinnitus SUCKS.

And wear earplugs when you do walk arounds!

I started on the 717 using a DC Pro-X, but didn't really see the value of burning up batteries for one ears worth of ANR. Went to the Telex Airman 8, its a good option. Hopefully the hot mic function is used widely on the fleet, but it sure doesn't seem to be rolling out with any speed. In some cases I've seen where the observer panel has the hot mic mod, but not the CA or FO panel...

You can always tell when the inbound A320 crew is MSP based. CA leaves the ship headset plugged in after flying a transcon.....YUCK!

And the nav switches are on VOR because that's how we did it on the DC9.

I gotta wonder how much carryover from the 9 do we still have? Almost the entire PM cockpit flow before each flight seems beyond redundant to me.

I spent about 5 years working flightline mx on one of the loudest jets in the AF, another 17 years flying them. Throw 12 years concurrently flying a bunch of different airlines without noise canceling and removing at 18. But the VA told me last year thay my hearing is perfect, so you're statement can't be true. 🤣 Some heavy sarcasm just in case it's not apparent.

Mine got denied too. VA believes im immune to hearing loss because of this rare condition I have called "Youneverdeployeditis"

Yes, this is my experience, too. Air leakage from seals and even some display screens on or near max brightness is where I find the most extraneous noise.

I’m laughing reading everyone’s comments about stereotypes of captains who wear ship sets, recalling a fairly recent takeoff where, as PM, I called V1, Rotate and did not see any movement on the yoke. I yelled louder, “RO-TATE!” at which point we both laughed. That was in the loudest 717 I’ve flown.
