Furthermore, imagine this. Ed on CNBC supporting a minimum level of safety and advocating change to US law, allowing for the continuation of government funding at existing levels, in the absence of a funding extension. I am not saying necessarily advocate a strike, but not be opposed to suspending operations over safety. Not only would ATC and ALPA be heroes, Delta itself would be the one company, bucking the trend and advocating for change. If Delta became the big money and catalyst to change this law, it would resonate for decades. It would be a massive power play between Ed and Trump, one that he would win, publicly and monetarily by ensuring this never happened again.

POSIWID 11 shutdowns since 1981. On a positive note, while some administrations used the moment for (useful) political theatre by shutting down things like access to Mt Rushmore and Yellowstone NP, there's some online commentary that suggests you can currently just drive by the entry gate to quite a few National Parks without having to pay the fee. |
The TSA might be the ones who end this shutdown for us. While firing ATC for calling in sick might be illegal (not that that would stop them), they can replace them with military controllers right away.
They can't replace the TSA overnight, so they can't really fire them either. |
