Im not saying this is wrong but it does not matter. Pragmatism will win the day and means testing will eventually be needed. I don’t think being an ASE mechanic will work for the masses as a way to earn 250K. A more practical route would be a life long progression in education to achieve in a chosen field. That starts with a bachelors degree. Embry Riddle is making those people and in their 20s. Airline pilot as of now is still one of the best gigs and competitively requires a degree even if it is a liberal arts basket weaving theory for the modern age major.

if means testing is put forth, then it will be attached to a minimum number of hours (at least 50) worked per week in a job that contributes to our gdp. watch those decide they need to work even harder to enjoy a fraction of their easy life they currently live. capitalism and free will and all.

SS needs to be fixed. A guy with $5 million in his 401k taking let's say $300k a year out gets his full SS payment. Now let's look at someone living on their SS check. If they take a job to try to make ends meet their SS is reduced if they make more than approximately $18k a year working. I saw this happen to my mother.
Same thing with rental income. I know a guy with 300 doors in his rental portfolio and he brags about still getting the full SS benefit.
So, yeah, if you're rich you shouldn't get SS benefits but you should still pay for it.

I would say, in the context of my post that you quoted, that both the guy with $5 million in his 401 (k) and the guy with 300 doors in his rental portfolio are rich compared to the person living on SS and getting penalized because they are working to make ends meet. Wouldn't you agree?

Where do you draw the line? Because that matters.
Relatively to a normal working class guy yeah, they're "rich"
Compared to a sustenance farmer in Africa both are wealthy beyond comprehension.
At what total assets do you just stop a program that I will pay into for 50 years, that never had a "you're too rich" test, just a "did you work enough years and pay in" test.

both of the two people you want to bash and take away their earned benefit are the only reason it exists for the rest of the country. SS already functions as a significant wealth redistribution system by function of its bend points. But it’s never enough for some people.
