China and PED’s

I’m domestic only but I was curious is there’s any truth to this. I read that the Chinese authorities are demanding full access to PED’s (to include EFB’s) upon arrival.
I can’t imagine handing over my phone or personal iPad and giving anybody, including a hostile goverment access to my data.
Glad I’m on the lowly DRJ (aka 717).

Man, they're going to find out I have way too many pictures of my doggos on my phone.

Realize too that our own CBP has that right while you're returning home and standing in "no man's land" before they say "welcome home".

The US government can effectively do the same and to US citizens

i’ve been to China several times now both for work and personal and I have never been asked this or have seen it happen.

They don't need to ask to see your phone. As soon as your phone connects to their cell towers, they already have access.

And China is now telling people not to travel to Seattle because they might be harassed at customs

They can, but citizens can refuse to provide their passwords. They could then detain you. Then you can get reroute pay.

They can take your phone, but unlocking it is their problem.

You should power down your phone before re-entering the US if you're afraid of a search. You can't be made to give up your PIN.
