NWA 1998 Strike Strategy
 
Our MEC Chairman Captain Steve Zoller was one of the best I have ever seen.



Something Steve said over and over I wanted to share.



He said we should never slow down or do anything illegal. Northwest was making record profits. His position was that the more money Northwest made, the stronger our case was with the NMB.



The legal leverage afforded us under the Railway Labor Act is more than we will ever need to attain the contract we deserve. Informational picketing will soon begin. By the latest the June 10th Delta Board of Directors meeting in New York.



Bid that day off and show your support for our MEC, Captain Malone and our negotiating team.



Fly safe and never say or do anything that would put your job in jeopardy.



Delta's tripling of earnings per share and pretax profit is the best leverage.



Every negotiator will tell you the same thing. Their power comes from unity. When they walk in the room with 13,000 pilots at their back, they cannot fail.

Leverage....afforded to US....under the RLA? That must be great news to hear for the multiple airlines that have been working under an amendable contract for years now.

You have me a bit confused on what your strategy really is. In the past you stated that our leverage was backpacks off. Now you state the leverage is a strike via release from the NMB and take no other action.
UAL's current rates according to JM are 14% above ours overall or ½ percent below our TA rates. I am missing the leverage there also.
Why not follow your leadership instead of a constant barrage of contradictory posts.
This is going to take a long time. Follow your leadership and relax. You can survive a few years without a raise.

Sorry, the board replacing our management is found nowhere in the RLA. If that did happen, it would be called market forces.

the reality is we are in a negotiating environment that no other labor group has ever been in, ever. Our profit sharing has essentially forced everyone to scramble to write new pages to the negotiating playbook. Both sides have to adjust to this never before seen environment. I just had this discussion today with a fellow pilot, that this might be the only time in history that as we continue to build profits and negotiate a new contract, our pay continues to increase through record profit sharing. Its a beautiful insurance policy.

Is there opportunity cost while we await a new contract? It depends. If we were talking about a simple contract extension like United, we would have a contract by now, very easily. However, the company still wants concessions from us in several areas. That is not acceptable to us in this negotiating environment. So is there opportunity cost while we await a new contract? It's not clear. But we will be ok.

I'm 17% behind UAL pay rates. And way behind pre BK pay rates at DELTA. The last TA didn't restore decade old pay rates, and added concessions to a BK contract. We can wait years if the Moak guys can only deliver concessions on top of concessions. Which is exactly what was negotiated.
