Who buys the beer?
#21
I was just off OE on a 5 day and my Capt bought over $100 per night in beverages and food. He would have cut my hand off if I tried to pay. Of course, he was on a GS...But I learned a lesson on that trip...And I fully intend to pay it forward when I move left. That Capt set a way high bar, but others since then have matched it. I intend to keep that tradition alive.

8 year FO here. Just this week on a trip while on a GS I asked the bartender for separate checks. Captain says, "Put the beers on mine." I tried...said, I'm on a GS..seriously. Wouldn't hear any of it.

It is the NYC cost of living adjustment for FOs. Some ATL 717 FOs also receive a similar adjustment to bring them up to a living wage.
If you are really asking the meaning of GS, it stands for Green Slip, which is flying for premium pay when scheduling is out of available reserve pilots.

Sadly, I have most definitely bought myself more beer than captains have. Maybe I just drink too much beer. Maybe it's my airplane, the -88, maybe it's my base, ATL, or maybe the captains just don't like me. All I know is I am content buying my own beer, but to say the captain always buys the beer is crap because that is not my experience. FWIW, I never let my fo buy any beer when I was a regional captain making $80 per hour and I sure as hell aren't going to let my fo's buy their own beer when I'm captain here. Just an observation, a lot of my captains are the cheapest people I know. I have had to eat by myself because my captain went to fast food for dinner.

Since then, of guys who want to go out, it seems to be about 25% who don't buy a thing, 25% who pay for everything (including one guy who bought multiple rounds for both FOs and about 6 flight attendants in STR!). The other 50% are anywhere between buying 1 beer to paying the entire tab and leaving me to cover tip to buying all the beers, etc. Lots of variations on this one.
Maybe it's just me? I mean, I shower regularly, I rarely if ever fart on the flight deck, I always let the captain have first choice on crew meals, I always take the fat girl...so what am I doing wrong!?

Recently had a captain on a two day trip who said "I don't do walk arounds, but I buy the beer". Ok fine, that's his thing, I can play that game....
We eventually make it to the bar for a beer or two and when the check comes he says "I don't use my card on purchases less than $50, and don't have enough cash, so can you get the check?" Really?! So that's how it's going to be? This was after listening to his stories about his $1.5M house he just bought and his $100,000 Porsche...fortunately he is the exception and not the rule. Most captains that go out for a drink or dinner offer to buy the beer or at least the first round.
