Default Chairman Letter

Today's chairman letter has me scratching my head. I have noticed a trend that in each letter, he dials back from his campaign speeches of restoration. We went from restoration to restoring the profession to our proposal is aggressive. This trend vector is getting worse. It smells of concessions.

We will see but I think we are approaching the end game rapidly.

Malone is reasonably practical and level headed. It could be that after dealing with the company, briefed by the NMB and costing all the numbers reality is setting in. What we want is the deal that produces the best overall contract for the pilot group. That deal probably won't fly on the forums but will easily ratify.

I hear that.

I'm not so sure that the forum doesn't speak for the larger group. A year ago we were "the vocal minority", a failed TA later and it's a different world.

They all promise something until they get elected. Then all of a sudden something happens and they become weak and timid.

You are fooling yourself if you think the old guard is out. ALPA NATIONAL is the old guard and it will take years maybe even decades to change the organization.

Fellow Delta Pilots,
This week your MEC meets in New York City for a regularly scheduled meeting. Regular meetings occur three to four times per year. At these meetings the MEC is briefed, either in person or via a written report, by all standing MEC committees. The briefing by our Negotiating Committee will be received with great interest, and the MEC will provide continued direction to this report, as well as all others. We are in New York City for a couple reasons: it is the second largest pilot domicile and Delta is conducting its annual shareholders’ meeting there on June 10. By now you are asking, so what? Here is what:
Delta recently released an 8-K filing, which is an SEC requirement anytime a publicly traded company has an event that may be important to shareholders or the SEC. The corporation has announced a return of at least 70 percent of free cash flow annually to shareholders. With an estimate of $4.5 - $5.5 billion in free cash flow this year, this equates to a transfer of $3.15 - $3.85 billion to the shareholders for 2016.
The primary takeaway from the 8-K filing is that we are working for a company that is very profitable. Remember, free cash flow comes after expenses such as salaries, which means the corporation will still be able to return 70 percent of free cash flow after our new contract is settled. All other stakeholders – management, the other employees, investors – have now been rewarded . . . except for the pilots.
It is time for the Delta Board of Directors (BOD) to acknowledge our investments in the corporation, address the rising market for pilots, ensure Delta will continue to be able to attract the best of the best and take the necessary steps to recognize the Delta pilots as equal business partners as we move forward together to write the next chapter in Delta’s story.
To quote my December 22, 2015, Chairman’s Letter, “we put a substantial package on the table.” The December re-engagement proposal was built on pilot input, representative input, Delta’s financial projections, and ALPA’s Economic and Financial Analysis Department’s projections for 2016. It was, and remains, aggressive but it is economically sustainable and within the industry’s zone of reasonableness. Our negotiators are working diligently to obtain the contract that we deserve. Now we need for the Delta BOD and senior management to make the proper deal with their last business partner and investors – the Delta pilot group. It is time.
Your MEC will be carrying this message directly to the Delta BOD on June 10, 2016 in New York City as your MEC conducts picketing of the Delta Shareholders’ Meeting on your behalf. You will have an opportunity to show your support for your MEC and Negotiating Committee on June 24, 2016 through informational picketing at each base. Click here to learn more and sign up.
Stay informed. Stay engaged. Stay professional. Stay together. Fraternally,
Captain John Malone Delta MEC Chairman

I liked Captain Malone's letter.

Now every Delta pilot who cares enough to read knows Bastian is returning $3.15B to $3.85B to himself and the shareholders in 2016.

Our full counterproposal is nothing more than a penny in the street to Bastian.

We asked for far, far too little.

Council 44 Captain Rep Scott Martin said it perfectly, there is little wiggle room in our counterproposal.

That was before the 8k Captain Malone outlined and the Q1 results.

Now there is No Wiggle Room.

Concessions will be resoundly rejected in MEMRAT.

The MEC knows that.
