Pick up from Pilot to Pilot swap question.

Just curious about this. I know I cannot ws if it puts me over ALV +15, but can you pick up a trip from someone on the pilot to pilot swap board even if it puts you over ALV +15? Looking at PWA and trying to figure it out is hurting my pea brain.

Yes you can.

Thx Herk! I thought that may be the case but wasn't sure.

This is one of the things I hoped to see cleaned up in the TA we did not get or even attempt. Both swaps and pickups should be governed by the ALV plus 15 limit. It costs us a significant number of jobs by not restoring this.

The ALV+15 Max Pickup limit applies only when you are picking up a WS. It does not apply to a swap with the pot or picking up something off of the swap board. It also does not apply to a GS.

It was my understanding that your swp still can't take you over alv +15

I agree with this. The one time I've taken a swap board trip, my Max Pick-up limit as shown on my schedule was reduced by the value of the trip.

It shouldn't cost jobs if you pick something up off the swap board. If I pick up a trip, another guy just sits home instead of me. It's not picking up uncovered open time like a WS does. I do agree that swaps cost jobs because I can swap a 1-day for a 2-day and go over the ALV+15, but pilot to pilot swaps and pickups shouldn't cost us any jobs.

It doesn't count for picking up that trip but it does count for picking up future trips.

So say I pickup a WS first then a swap I can go over ALV+15 but if I pick up a swap then try to WS I must stay under ALV+15.

^^^

This is correct. A pickup from the swap board only looks at FAR's. The ALV+15 limit does not apply although it will reduce your max pickup limit if you are under the ALV+15 limit when you pick it up.

You can also swap with the pot above the ALV+15 limit. The only thing the limit prohibits you from doing is a straight WS that takes you over the max pickup limit.

That would only apply if the person dropping the trip has no intention of picking up something else. 90% of the time they are dumping a trip to grab something else.

True. I'll agree with that. So it may cost us jobs, but the flexibility is nice to have.

Most of us who use it don't do so to get around the ALV+15. I always personal drop crappy trips during the first PCS run so I'll use the swap board to snag a trip that may be better than any of the junk left in the pot (which is what ends up there after the first PCS run) to get back to at least the GS pay trigger for the month.

It's nice to have that flexibility without running into a limit. I've had tons of months where I have a max pickup limit of like 10:15 so I can't pick up a piece of cake commutable 2-day and have to grab a 4-leg uncommutable one day or something like that. You can go to the swap board and find an easy 2-day or something better than a crummy long day trip and have no limit to stop you.

The transaction you describe will indeed reduce your published max pick up, however the pilot swap/ pick-up transactions are exempt from the max pick up limitations. So reality is that a pilot swap board line value increase will almost guarantee you will be locked it of the w/s and swap with pot game for the rest of the month. Who cares? You're still good fir G/S action, should a later opportunity emerge. Let the FAR limits be your guide. The rules auditor is fully functional for contemplated pilot to pilot actions.
