Default NYC 717 Flying and Crashpads

I'm trying to find a good crash pad as I plan on staying based in NYC on the 717 for a while. What airport is the bulk of NYC 717 flying out of? Should I get a place close to LGA, or a more central location in order to be closer to JFK and EWR?

Kew Gardens is the primary location. Halfway between LGA and JFK. You can even use the Crew Runner, space permitting, to get you there.
It's a shame, but I hear Crashpad Oasis is down for good.

2nd for Kew Gardens. 717 seems to be a fairly even mix of all 3 airports. I don't know if I'd commit to Ozone Park (JFK) or Astoria/Corona (LGA). I mean you could, and then 'walk' to work almost half the time while doing the long-or-expensive cross Queens journey the rest of the time.

FWIW 717 mailboxes are at LGA.

Dude, where have you been?

Some disgruntled temp. tenant turned the owner in to the local authorities, for health and safety reasons. The owner closed the doors due to not wanting the hassle anymore with people reserving a room, then no-showing and not paying.

I think it's been 10 months or so since I've been there. Too bad, it was a pretty nice setup, especially for a commuter who only occasionally had to stay the night.

Don't know what the health and safety issues could have been. It was a crashpad, so not luxurious, but cipher locks on every floor, a cleaning service, etc...

I would get a crashpad right outside of LGA airport in the neighborhood of East Elmhurst. Near Marriot Courtyard where most crews layover anyways. I would assume most of your flying will be out of LGA and JFK is an easy cab ride away down the expressway. EWR is doable via public transportation( trains) every so often if you must go there. It's also very safe near LGA. Kew gardens is not as great and is crowded in my opinion.

Did the summer on the 717 out of NYC. The staffing was so bad that even as a junior guy I was able to get basically whatever trips I wanted, always commutable 1 end and sometimes both ends commutable (not sure how it is now). I was able to get by simply using the Five Towns Inn (only hotel I know of that give a consistent crew rate). They will pick you up and drop off at the terminal in JFK instead of federal circle so you will save the $$ on cabs to get you to the crashpad. If you only need a couple nights a month, like I did, I'd recommend the Five Towns. If you gotta get to LGA it's $12 I think on the Airporter, and EWR is around $17 on AirTrain->Long Island Railroad->NJ Transit (but it's about 2 hours and a royal pain). But the bonus you get out of EWR is if you finish late, plenty of flights on FedEx to get you out if needed.

Kew Gardens is your best option since it's equidistant to JFK and LGA, has good train access, lots of restaurants, and even a few parks to exercise in. Since the MD88 is turning into a pumpkin at LGA I'd expect the 717 to pick a majority of that flying. If I had a crystal ball I'd bet the majority of 717 flying out of NYC will be out of LGA.

I was only there for a month (ATL now) but got by with the Five Towns in JFK and Airbnb at LGA. Not bad at all really, on the 717 you won't be on reserve so depending on your situation you don't necessarily 'need' a true crashpad.
