Times must be good if arguing over tips is the topic du jour.

The captain spent ten minutes essentially bullying her to the point of being annoying. She finally caved and agreed to give us the 20% discount.
Upon finishing his entire meal, plate clean, everything devoured the captain declared to me his meal was unsatisfactory and would not be leaving her a tip. I kept quiet and left more than enough tip to cover both of us. |

We seem to have a growing number of pilots joining the flight attendants in future Sherpa training feeling the need to travel with everything they own. The standard bag tip anywhere in the world is a buck a bag not a buck for 3 or 4 bags. It's one of the reasons we get less then optimal service and timeliness from some drivers. If you have to travel with the kitchen sink and your blowup doll tip appropriately.

If staying more than one night, I'll leave a few bucks on the nightstand. |

I always tip hotel maids. These folks do more actual work for me than van drivers (whom I also tip).

Me too. Tipping keeps the maid from dipping your toothbrush in the toilet. At least that's how I justify it.

Ugh. I can't belive this thread is still going.
Only at Delta. Where there are sooo many "rules." Nobody will pressure me, and tell me how to tip, or who to tip. I see what others have said....resistance is futile. You will be assimilated. Standing by for incoming. :) :) |

What's the consensus on tipping uber drivers these days?

Disclaimer: I don't work at Delter.
After nearly 20 years flying airplanes commercially, I tip a buck per trip, none if the driver is rude, reckless, or doesn't help with luggage. I tend to trip extra when they go above and beyond like taking you places they aren't required to take you (food, training, parking, etc). If you think about it, a large crew hotel in a big city, a van driver probably does two airport runs per hour. 8 people in the van each way. 4 trips. That's $32 per hour just on tips and minimum wage is at least $8 per hour on top of that. He/she is making more than most regional FOs and most FAs anywhere. So my heart doesn't bleed when a crew member doesn't offer a tip. I don't scold, I don't stare, and I don't make up for them. I just let them do them and I do me. $5 a bag? Must be nice to have disposable income like that. Bet it is great for picking up chicks to share stories of your humanitarianism. |

I thought the tip was included in the uber fare!?! Thank goodness I've only used uber a couple of times. Will remember this for future reference.

Instead of tipping the van driver $5 I'll take Uber and pay $3.25

I didn't read the article but it looks like another I've seen. My understanding is your "rider" rating goes up if you're a good tipper. A nice rating goes a long way towards getting picked up at the airport in your commuter city for a late night ride home, when your sleeping wife doesn't REALLY want to pick you up. :p:D

Both parties are rating each other. If the Uber driver is insisting on the tip or trying to guilt you into a tip, that should be reflected in their rating. Lyft pretty much makes it mandatory by overly enabling tipping and driver recruiting and promotions.
A lot of drivers in California have both stickers in the window but prefer making a Lyft pick up. |
You don't have to tip Uber but I usually do anyway.
It still seems like an amazingly good deal the few times I've used it. I live a little off the beaten path. The other day I needed a ride from my house to somewhere 35 minutes away. Everyone else I know was working and I didn't want to wait. The guy came all the way out to my house (20 minutes from where he was on the interstate) then took me to my destination for $36. Before Uber, a taxi would have either never come out here or it would have been at least $100. Even with the tip it was cheap. And I just got a nice raise and don't mind sharing the wealth. |
It isn't the money, it's the principle of the thing and how it could easily be abused.

I didn't realize you could tip with Uber. They certainly don't make it easy like Starbucks does.

Compulsory tipping allows employers to keep wages low forcing employees to rely on tips to make a living. How often do you see/hear in a job posting "make great tips" this is just code for we are not going to pay you a living wage? Tipping has its place but it shouldn't be required. I'm tired of supplementing the business' costs.
A good friend said once "if you can't afford the tip, don't got out to eat". That's another viewpoint I consider also. |
