Times must be good if arguing over tips is the topic du jour.

Hey navigatro, how much are you tipping your van drivers? Are you leaving anything for housekeeping?

The guy who gives up Mr. Pink is the rat, stoolie, plant, cop. This scene is a little hint for what is coming next. Classic movie and way better than Hateful Eight or Kill Bill 1 or 2. (Although the Kill Bill's were fun.)

If you have to travel with the kitchen sink and your blowup doll tip appropriately.

Do you tip the hotel maid?

If staying more than one night, I'll leave a few bucks on the nightstand.

Yes, it's the custom in Europe.

BounceBounceBam 01-28-2017 07:50 AM

I always tip hotel maids. These folks do more actual work for me than van drivers (whom I also tip).

Me too. Tipping keeps the maid from dipping your toothbrush in the toilet. At least that's how I justify it.

...and they're usually paid less. I completely agree.

Ugh. I can't belive this thread is still going.
Only at Delta. Where there are sooo many "rules."
Nobody will pressure me, and tell me how to tip, or who to tip.

I see what others have said....resistance is futile. You will be assimilated.

Standing by for incoming. :) :)

What's the consensus on tipping uber drivers these days?

If you're like me, I only bid trips where the hotels have robes and QVC on the TV. I have 4 inflatable cats too. What happened to this airline?

popcorn 01-29-2017 08:27 PM

Disclaimer: I don't work at Delter.

After nearly 20 years flying airplanes commercially, I tip a buck per trip, none if the driver is rude, reckless, or doesn't help with luggage. I tend to trip extra when they go above and beyond like taking you places they aren't required to take you (food, training, parking, etc).

If you think about it, a large crew hotel in a big city, a van driver probably does two airport runs per hour. 8 people in the van each way. 4 trips. That's $32 per hour just on tips and minimum wage is at least $8 per hour on top of that. He/she is making more than most regional FOs and most FAs anywhere. So my heart doesn't bleed when a crew member doesn't offer a tip. I don't scold, I don't stare, and I don't make up for them. I just let them do them and I do me.

$5 a bag? Must be nice to have disposable income like that. Bet it is great for picking up chicks to share stories of your humanitarianism.

Probably should. In some markets (LA, NYC, SFO, etc) in town they can really clean up. But in most areas they really don't make that much and have to buy everything themselves.

Denny Crane 01-30-2017 08:55 AM

I thought the tip was included in the uber fare!?! Thank goodness I've only used uber a couple of times. Will remember this for future reference.

You're right, it's a cashless transaction and tips are not expected.

sherpster 01-30-2017 10:56 AM

Instead of tipping the van driver $5 I'll take Uber and pay $3.25

I didn't read the article but it looks like another I've seen. My understanding is your "rider" rating goes up if you're a good tipper. A nice rating goes a long way towards getting picked up at the airport in your commuter city for a late night ride home, when your sleeping wife doesn't REALLY want to pick you up. :p:D

Yup.............but it smacks of extortion to me.................give me a good tip or I'll give you a bad rating. Don't like the direction that is headed.

Denny

notEnuf 01-30-2017 11:05 PM

Both parties are rating each other. If the Uber driver is insisting on the tip or trying to guilt you into a tip, that should be reflected in their rating. Lyft pretty much makes it mandatory by overly enabling tipping and driver recruiting and promotions.

A lot of drivers in California have both stickers in the window but prefer making a Lyft pick up.

ERflyer 01-31-2017 01:07 AM

You don't have to tip Uber but I usually do anyway.

It still seems like an amazingly good deal the few times I've used it. I live a little off the beaten path. The other day I needed a ride from my house to somewhere 35 minutes away. Everyone else I know was working and I didn't want to wait. The guy came all the way out to my house (20 minutes from where he was on the interstate) then took me to my destination for $36. Before Uber, a taxi would have either never come out here or it would have been at least $100.

Even with the tip it was cheap. And I just got a nice raise and don't mind sharing the wealth.

Denny Crane 01-31-2017 05:17 AM

It isn't the money, it's the principle of the thing and how it could easily be abused.

I understand your point. I tip Uber for multiple reasons, it's not always altruistic. In fact some of them are selfish. One of them is that I want to ensure I get picked up in out of the way locations. Another, I want priority and a good rating.

GogglesPisano 01-31-2017 07:30 AM

I didn't realize you could tip with Uber. They certainly don't make it easy like Starbucks does.

Compulsory tipping allows employers to keep wages low forcing employees to rely on tips to make a living. How often do you see/hear in a job posting "make great tips" this is just code for we are not going to pay you a living wage? Tipping has its place but it shouldn't be required. I'm tired of supplementing the business' costs.
A good friend said once "if you can't afford the tip, don't got out to eat". That's another viewpoint I consider also.
