Downtown ATL
Nice place to visit........ but I wouldn't want
to live there. Went to a pub and had a soda pop,
No less that 3 homeless people hit me up for money
or handouts. I had to walk 1 block from the pub
to the hotel. Scummy area, way to many ( street urchins)
Don't give those bums anything but the time of day,
and watch your wallet. Glad to be home!

You need to take the train to Buckhead or a bus to Virginia Highlands. Downtown is not one of the nicer areas. Midtown is ok if you are downtown and don't want to go very far. Downtown is not where I would want to spend very much free time. It's for government, business, big hotels, Ga State, droves of homeless people, and pigeons. By the way, the City is thinking about a no-panhandling law to cure that. They know the homeless are ruining it there. If I were laying over downtown, I would walk to Virginia Highlands for the afternoon. It's only a mile and a half. Heck, even uptown is better than downtown. There's a lot to do in Atlanta, you can kill quite a bit of time there without much effort. There is a new aquarium near the CNN building that is supposed to be interesting.

Our long, over 30 hour layovers are in Buckhead. Very nice area. Great shopping, there's a movie theater and even a major supermarket for those on a budget. We're staying at the Crown Plaza which is nice and we have stayed at the Sheraton Buckhead. The only downside is the traffic to the airport.
If I were staying downtown or at the airport, I'd take MARTA for the day to Buckhead.

The LeFont Garden Hills is a small art-movie theatre, actually it's one of several in the area by that name but the one at 2835 Peachtree Rd. in Buckhead shows art films. Drink a pitcher of local brew made in-house at Rock Bottom Brewery at junction of Peachtree Rd. at Piedmont, then head down to the movie theatre and see an art feature. The Fellini's in the same little plaza sells pretty good pizza, get that after the show. My neighborhood in Atlanta had a 72-hour power outage once after a storm, I would go eat at Fellinis and chill out in the theatre air conditioning.

Buckhead is gone now. So don't go there unless you want to hang out at a construction zone or a condo lobby. My favorite places to go are gordon biersch on peachtree and 7th, and the Highlander on piedmont and 9th at the midtown promenade. The both have perfect pints of draft beer and extremely good food. The highlander has pretty loud music and looks like a metal bar, but the owner has always been super picky about the food served, so it's actually some of the best food around there. I have lived in downtown atlanta for my whole bachelor life. if you want to know anything about it, give me a shout.
