The 2012 Southeast Old Thresher's reunion is through tomorrow in Denton, NC; not too far from Winston Salem. It's the largest antique farm equipment show in the country (world?) if you have any interest in that kind of thing. Antique tractors, steam engines, steam train, sawmill, etc. You'd have to rent a car. http://www.farmpark.com/

"Winston" as they call it is of course derived from very old tobacco money, and it is interesting from that viewpoint- tobacco made NC what it is and Winston has one of the 4 better schools in the state, Wake Forest University. Winston is not a college town but there is a hip club scene and you can always have fun getting beers and club hopping in the downtown area. In fact it is a lot better for that than nearby Greensboro, despite the fact that UNC has a chapter there. I spent the last year in Greenboro and have to say it one of the least attractive towns I have been in lately. It is extremely hard to find your way around GB, the street design is derived from old cow trails along ridgelines thrown around like spaghetti. This is common for areas with rolling terrain, as cows are a lazy group and they always stick to ridge lines. Those become wagon trails which later became roads. Atlanta is the same, difficult city to get around in for visitors, hard to see how it is laid out because it is not really laid out. I may not have tried as hard as I should have to enjoy GB while there, but the crazy layout and the slow cultural scene (or my perception) kind of threw water on it. A "good" town in my humble view is either a big aviation center, or a university center, and GB had really neither in great quantity. Winston has Wake Forest so it is a bit more collegiate. By and large I doubt you have a great time in either town but between the two W-S is the more interesting of the two and they are only 20 miles apart. Post back if you find anything you like in terms of clubs- I went to many of them but can't recall what the names are.

Default Two good music clubs are Ziggy's and ...

.... The Garage. Both have websites and there might be a good band there on any given night. The Thursday GBO newspaper has the seeking local attractions supplement.

Down in the hysteric district are some good little restaurants e.g NoMo's and others as well as a little theater showing current movies and serving wine and beer.

All in all, you can probably occupy yourself for a night without too much difficulty

I was there for 3 nights... it was pretty boring. But at least I caught up on my sleep and my capt treated me to a $150 dinner.... can't complain about that.
