Apply to somewhere where you can simply tell them that you are going to need a few hundred hours in the aircraft - especially if it’s NOT a CL-65 - before you are willing to upgrade. They are desperate enough for even near upgrade eligible CAs that it ought not to be a problem. Alternatively, get a little bit current and apply to a ULCC. They’ll take you in a heartbeat with a new type in 737 or A320.

Hey Everybody,
If I apply, not as a DEC, but as an experienced FO, CL-65 TYPE, 8K 121 TSIC; 3K 135 TSIC BEECH 1900D, will I end up getting forced into the left seat sooner than later? I have been out of flying for 4 years, recent GA piston single BFR and IPC only. I think I would benefit from some time in the right seat. Thanks. if you want right seat time, a ULCC or maybe even a legacy would call you in a heartbeat with those quals |

They will probably only hire you as a DEC. Plus they are still forcing upgrades, you would be forced upgraded almost immediately with your hours unless you took a 4 year seat lock as an FO. The way they have set up their forced upgrade policy makes it almost impossible
for them to hire you into the right seat unless you take that seat lock. That said, this place is a dumpster fire for Captains. I would highly recommend coming here only to get current and then get out. QOL for CAs is trash right now, and it won’t get better for years. The company and DL have no interest in fixing the problem, even though they know 100% how to. (Advanced seniority) |
thanks for the advice
Thanks to everyone for the input.
Forgive my naive questions about the hiring climate. Since I got out four years ago, I have not kept up with the industry at all. I have been in an aviation time capsule. Seeing the changes in minimums (down) and salaries (up) is astounding compared to when I left aviation in 2019. |

Generic regional/ULCC folks pilots too. The fastest path to UA is greater than 0 hours time in type at Spirit, JetBlue or Frontier. The fastest path to those companies is a regional type rating and greater than 0 hours. |

Thats still a three year commitment. We got people going to regionals, finishing OE, going to fly a 320 for 11 months and then heading off to legacies. It's crazy times, why sign a contract? Frontier and Spirit are essentially a flow to United now.

this is incorrect. You will not be force upgraded if you have less than 250 hours with the company. So yes, you will possibly be forced within 6-9 months, but it won’t be automatically immediate...
