Any 2018 Interview Tips ?

I was wondering if anyone has interviewed recently?
Any info on the agenda, topics, etc?

PhantomHawk 02-15-2018 06:44 PM

There is about to be a predictable group of jaded posters that will say the same old tired stuff....”have a pulse”....”be able to fog a mirror”....”why would you come here?”......blah blah blah. Feel free to ignore those types.

I will assume you did your homework and have your own reasons for coming here, so I wish you well and will give you the only advice I can give. It’s been many years since I interviewed here, but I got the job. Know your aviation stuff, which is expected. More importantly, be positive and personable and show you actually want the job.....and I’m sure you will get it. I hope to see you here.

You should arrive about the time we shut down.

Interview tips?

Yeah. Don't. Call them and cancel. Do yourself the favor.

Know your way around a Jeppesen chart and be prepared to brief an approach. Review the systems of the aircraft you're currently flying as well, as you'll probably be asked about it. Otherwise, I'd suspect it's mostly CRM or situational decision-making type questions.

I wouldn't expect too many curve balls. Dress to look the part, have a good demeanor, and you should be fine.

Thanks !

Thanks, great advice !

The best way to describe a regional interview - Two fingers will be placed over your wrist. Slight pressure will be applied to your radial artery which is located towards the thumb side of the wrist. Once a pulse is confirmed you will be told that you're hired. Good luck!!

You forgot, for the more stringent regionals, there is a second test required, the mirror fog test. If both pulse and breathing is detected, then you are hired.

I remember a time when the interview group would have like 20 guys and by the end only 6 were hired. Now they can’t even get 6 to show up.

I will be somewhat of a contraction.
First let me say up front that I put the odds of ExpressJet surviving at 50/50.

Upgrade times can be like stock prices. People tend to chase the “sure thing” and a quick upgrade today may turn into years when you are hired.

XJT’s “price” has been driven down. Moral is low and upgrade times are... long.
Frankly I think about 4-5 years in most cases is ideal in regionals. The one year upgrades except where the person has prior 121 experience worry me.

So the possible up side of coming here. If the stars align and we are purchased it could be a home run for anyone hired here recently. But that’s a big “if”. It must mean UAL really wants to buy us and work that out with its unions and Inc would be willing to sell their potential hang man the rope. If INC tries to demand too much UAL may have other options. TSH (all or part). Republic (though it would be a mess untangling their other contracts), maybe even Mesa. Others?

My advice, however, is to look elsewhere. If you do come here be ready to make a lateral move.

How long was your upgrade? There are far too many guys who upgraded in like 1-2 years and are now critical of the possibility of upgrading at 1,000 hours of 121. But I do agree at least 4 years of experience seems to be a well rounded threshold.

I still can't imagine how it was legal to have a 1500 hour captain with an ATP and a green guy in the right seat with 250 hours and a commercial. It's no wonder more accidents occurred back in the day.

When I was hired I was told 5-8 years. It was 18 months.
Did I have any accidents? No. But at the same time I’d been flying military, part 91 and 135 single pilot/no autopilot for 12 years when I was hired. My first upgrade was in the ATR-72- like a big 172 with two engines. Very docile, no swept critical wing. Things did not happen very fast in an ATR.
Still, I will be the first to say I probably could have used another year or two especially as I didn’t fly much on reserve and yes, I was paired with 250 hour FOs.
Balanced against that, however, I had very experienced instructors who had been in the industry over 15 years. Now we have guys becoming instructors after one year. It’s the blind leading the blind.
I’ll also be the first to say that the absence of an accident is not a sign of safety, so my statement that a four year upgrade may have been safer.
