MD-11 Training
Sorry for the intrusion from a Delta (Northwest) puke but I have a question about FDX MD11 training. One of our newer guys recently quit to go to FDX. He reported that training was incredible compared to Delta and that MD11 training was just under a 60 day footprint for initial. The super-defensive among the Deltoids are saying that's because of the MD11 accidents and that the FAA has mandated that long of a footprint. Sounds like BS to me because it wouldn't take that much extra to understand that the MD11 is tail-power limited when slow and in the flare. Appreciate the facts about MD11 training straight from the source.

I have actually attended MD-11 school at both Delta and Fedex.
It was like night and day, they were so different. But Fedex covered many more subjects - MD10 differences, HUD/EFVS, International ops, etc.... |
I'm calling BS on the mandatory extra FAA training. I've been on the MD-11 for most of the past 23 years. I've seen various versions of upset recovery training, bounced landing training & International training
The MD-11 landing characteristics are unique. I'd say it's more difficult to land consistently (tougher than the DC-10, 747 or 727). Quite frankly I think the MD-11 lands more like a 727-200 than a DC-10. All-in-all it's a great airplane. I enjoyed flying it very much. Sadly the greater efficiency of the 777 will replace the MD-11's one day. https://www.amazingjokes.com/img/201...cc_Correct.jpg |
There's 35 training days with 16 scheduled days off interspersed. So yes it's pretty long. But it was this long 12 years ago too, so I don't think the accidents or faa made it that way.

Training Footprints of all the fleets are very similar in length.

Thanks everyone, I didn't think this sounded right. Appreciate the responses.

An FAA mandated training footprint would be antithetical to the principles of AQP, assuming FDX is AQP.

Incredible in what way? Incredibly long? Incredibly inadequate? Incredibly good?

Delta ground schools have never won any awards.

Is Fedex AQP?
|
Yes, FedEx is AQP.

 Still doing some head scratching over this statement. Two MD-11 initials (FedEx and an ACMI) and I’m pretty sure I never heard those 9 words in that order said during either one.
When I went through Initial in 2001, it was too long. The good news was whatever they were doing years earlier that created a high percentage of failures had been changed. It does seem that MD11 training requires constant revision and changes. I do think they believe that they have put the dumber portion of our crew force in the Mad Dog. How else can you explain our group being given a One, Two, Three on how to land an airplane?? Not going to share the document here, but for those who haven't seen it, I'll share number three, "don't forget to flare"..... Thanks for the advice!! |

My guess is this was Delta speak for something related to LSAS.

When the majority of new MD pilots didn’t flare in their last airplane...they may need the advice!
