Default Airbus

During our HF conference in Memphis, a flight test pilot from Airbus stated that singe pilot operation is 4 years away. I didn’t believe him.

Then an engineer from Lockheed Martin gave a presentation on R2-D2 type artificial intelligence (A.I.). If the military is funding this it will make its way to commercial aviation.

Excuse me if I don't hold my breath on this quite yet.

Something tells me all those brand new 777s and 767s we're taking delivery of (not to mention the MDs, A300s and 757s) may need some pretty serious modifications before any of this comes to pass. Somehow I don't see that happening any time real soon.

We're back to the what may be technologically possible vs reality discussion again.

Many still living in dreamland thinking this will come to pass. Here is a prediction, this will get shoved so far up our arse's in the next 2-5 years to fix the pilot shortage; it will make the age 65 overnighter look tasty. So get your sphincters ready and start the stretching exercises now.

Did you leave a "not" out of your first sentence or do you want to change "will" to "won't"? If not, I can't tell what you're trying to say.

So, in 2 years I'm going to be flying a 757 from MEM to DSM by myself? Is that really what you're trying to tell us?

Really design, build, flight test and certify a new category of single pilot wide body aircraft in 2-5 years. Also get the FAA, ICAO and countries to develop, write and approve all the rule making to allow it operate in the same time frame. I do not think so.

All they have to do is take the right seat out and put this guy in. Also solves the generational issues you guys are having.

The sky is falling, the sky is falling!

Good on ALPA/IPA/IBT for working to get this provision removed as a nose under the tent is no good...but even in my mid-30s with eyes WIDE open on the industry and SP/RPA ops I’m not exactly shakin’ in mah boots.
