Haven't ever gotten a letter in over 20 years, so I'm not freaking out about the possibility now.

I really do not know. I am just getting ready to be a commuter so I was reading the section in the contract and kept seeing all that was referenced was trip protection and staging, so I asked. I think in the end if there are service failures or a irregularity report generated they will follow the contract.

On the other hand - your comments above have me scratching my head.
If crew scheduling gets to "scratching their heads" when they try to call someone 30-90 minutes prior to when the CBA says they have to be phone available, why is that any pilot's problem? I mean, sure, if your normal hometown jumpseat is running late, call away - what does it hurt.

There are a plethora of FedEx flights that arrive withing spittin distance of Midnight. While I don't think there are Many calls between 12-1230, you never quite know.

I, personally, would still JS into RA even if my scheduled arrival was after Midnight...I'd simply call CRS and point out my limited availability as permitted in the CBA, and again, point out that I'd be Right There at the Airport for any theoretical 0130 shows for a Reserve trip.

I generally book business, and not too long ago my jumpseat didn’t make it to Mem. I had to answer an irregularity report. Managers notes said aircraft divert. I answered it with pretty much the same thing. Never heard a thing about it, and the hours showed up in my bank. I was concerned about the same semantics issues, but it wasn’t a problem, or even mentioned.

Schoolhouse Rumor: I remember a new hire Eagle driver (O-6 type maybe) who was commuting from the Gulf Coast into RA. He was given an operational missed check-in because the schedulers tried calling him while he was on the jumpseat. I guess he kept doing it because his chief pilot called him in and told him to stop jumpseating to reserve or he would be fired.

Anyone else hear the same story?

Is one supposed to live in base if they are on reserve? That doesn’t make sense.

I also am confused, however, I never pull reserve, so I'm not an authority on the rules. But if you're on RA, you don't have to be available to take a call until midnight, right? So why would you be required to answer a call before that? And even if they call you right at midnight, you have 15 minutes to return the call. So I can't even see that there's any question if your jumpseat lands before 12:15am. And there isn't anything in the contract that bans jumpseating into reserve, is there?

Well if it was during his call window then you have 15 mins to call and pretty sure contract says be available by phone. I.E they do not have to check to see if you are on a jumpseat. No one has to live in base but except for R24 during your r days you have to be available by phone and if given latecall be able to be at mem ops in 1hr. I am not sure about other domiciles. Generally I do not think the company is out to get you but start putting your head above the ridgeline is not a good idea

26.J.2.a.

However some on here disagree with me.

I personally wouldn't do it. Nor would I advise a new hire to do it.

I missed a trip due to flight to MEM was canceled. I had booked it business and although I didn't get disciplined I lost the hours for the trip and those hours never showed up in my makeup bank. Not sure if staging would have changed anything, but it wasn't an option for me from that outstation anyway.

So if you advise a new hire not to commute to reserve, do you advice them to live in base instead? Or am I missing something?
