I also heard the same rumor according to someone who would definitely know. Also, this following might cause arguments on this forum and some worry for those who are junior, that person also said by this time next year several MD10s will be parked. I know we’ve heard that before along with the 727s hahah but... it’s eventually going to happen. For those who are junior on a wide body fleet it’s like playing musical chairs. How senior will you be in your seat when the music stops?

Big 777 bid 'after' Jan 1...
777 fleet update on PFC says....(8) new planes next year..?...
How many MD-10's do (8) 777's equal....?...?
I don't hear music, just voices...
That is all....I'll stop thinking now....
Back to my beer.....

I cannot locate an old posting FCIF with the fleet plan, but maybe some of you with better documentation skills saved a copy or know how to retrieve it...
The 777 seems to be manned about 20 pilots per/plane. I think the domestic birds have a lower ratio. One triple going in requires more manning than one MD-10 leaving takes out. I'm pretty sure there are smarter people that me who have poured over this and can pipe in.
The MD-10s may be on their way out. However, take a look at the gain of 767s. The MD-10/767 are probably more apples/apples as far as city pairings and scheduling is concerned.
But either way...the -10/11 is a contracting fleet. We saw this with the 727 and the DC-10. If you are senior on a seat, it can be a boondoggle. If you are junior--well--you can get whipsawed. The obvious choice for a new hire or junior guy is to go ahead and embrace the VNAV life and start learning the boeing way of doing things. Airbus and -10/-11 fleets are probably about as full as they will ever be, and over time will likely contract. There may be some ambitious types who have never flown the -11 from the right seat that might want to bid straight over to the left, but I imagine the majority of upgraders on the 11 going forward will be pilots who have flown it from the right seat at least once.

777 schoolhouse is ramping up to produce 16 crews a month.
777 is short of LCAs and will be hiring soon, if not sooner.
I've had two new-hires this month on my jumpseat who are going to the 777 (still in Indoc), but the last guy seems like really the LAST new hire guy according to the numbers. But the fact that they are hiring and sending guys through training during peak is something.
The company is buying extra 777s and every 767 that Boeing can produce...
I would expect a bid as soon as they can to keep the 777 training going.
That will not be right away - they have been withholding the ANC MD guys for a long time, and they need to back-fill that first.
Watch for a wave of new-hires going to ANC MD-11, and hopefully those guys don't get screwed like the Purple Nuggets did.
