Another pilot shot in MEM

Now even if you commute to Memphis in order to avoid having to live there, you still run the risk of getting shot while you sleep in your crashpad. Great.

Wish them a speedy recovery.

Overnitefr8 02-28-2023 06:44 AM

I know the FCIF doesn't mention where in Memphis, but does anyone know the approximate location of the crashed?
Speedy recover.

Hahaha it’s just like any other woke democratic city!! Never mind the fact it’s top 3 ranked for crime..

I wouldn’t call Memphis woke anyways, but hey it’s better than being on a boat in the middle of the pacific right? ??

Just happy to be here Sir!!! Could be worse in the desert. I’ll vote yes to anything! Someone else is waiting to take my place.

Rumor is that it was in Orange Mound. Must’ve been a heckuva deal.

Overnitefr8 02-28-2023 11:13 AM

I went to the local news stations' web pages to see if there was any info. Unfortunately there were so many shootings around the city last night I couldn't tell if one of those was related to our pilot.

Just a heads up

If you're in this situation higly recommend finding and interior bathroom and getting in the bathtub especiallyif its cast iron. Its the safest place during something like this.

A bathtub in a crashpad? Since when?
What happened to the hooker rinse at the kitchen sink?

This is impeccable advice! Next time I’m involved in a gang-related drive-by (which in Memphis could be any day now) this is exactly what I’ll do. If only Doughboy shared this knowledge with Ricky then the ending to Boyz n the Hood could’ve been so much happier.

Funny when this happens in an elementary school or a church or a movie theater or a grocery store or a walmart or a country music festival no one wonders if its gang related. 🤔

Doesnt seem like he wondered that. Do you?

Between earthquakes, tornadoes, and crime, the Memphis area is really one of the least safe places to live.

Awful. This is looking like the house was directly targeted.

The list of reasons to come work for FedEx only continues to grow.

1. Lower hourly pay despite generating greater revenue.
2. We’re the only company that has Substitution.
3. Miserably low trip rigs, no MDG or AMDG.
4. Miserable schedules.
5. Miserable work rules that dont punish the company financially for revisions.
6. Union that gives away all of our work rules to secure pay rates that you should have gotten without giving anything up.
7. Union that refuses to sue company for status quo violations.
8. Union that refuses to codify current perks enjoyed by pilots into CBA
9. Highest chance of any airline to get shot or carjacked while driving to work.
10. Highest chance of any airline to get shot while sleeping your crashpad.

What did I miss?

11. Only airline to require a detailed doctors (list symptoms/treatment/whatever they ask for) note to see if management agrees it is worth using your sick time for. If they don’t, then no pay for you. Every doctor I have requested this from looks at me like I’m asking them to remove my liver.

Does the company still use the sick matrix that they swore they don't use? As in, if you call out sick too much then you have to go to the principles office and explain yourself with a doctor's note?

wait till you go sick for a funeral. I had to prove i was there so I turned in the funeral home program bulletin showing my family member had actually died. Reminded me of George from Seinfeld…. I should of produced a polaroid next to casket instead.

Exactly. I love being here. I don’t want to be anywhere else. Doesn’t mean I can’t be frustrated that the company doesn’t want to do right by us.

I wouldn't take the better than on a boat in the middle of the pacific. Ask Dave Broyles, after retirement he took his boat around the world.

Actually locals would never buy a house in that area of town to save a buck meaning commuters are making their lives more dangerous by getting crash pads there. It'd be pretty shocking to see a drive by at a FedEx pilot's house in "Memphis"...

This x 1000. We as pilots did this person a disservice if we didn't tell him/her that wasn't a safe area. I've had crashpads in multiple bases in my career, and you don't have to be a local to know what areas to stay away from.

They need to talk about this on day 2 of Indoc... Maybe day one and spell it out where NOT to go. Memphis is a great place to live and hang out but like any other major city there are areas you should avoid. The fact that they got a crashpad there is insane. My crashpad for my first 9 months was in Cordova off of Canada Road. It was only $250 a month in 2018. It's probably $300 or $350 now.

FedEx crashpads on facebook is worth getting a burner Facebook account just to get on there and find a crashpad. If you go get a crashpad near Orange Mound it's like getting a crashpad near Compton in LA. That's not because Memphis is a terrible place, it's because you didn't do your homework.

I think of posts just like this when I'm getting in my car to drive home to my huge house in the suburbs to spend the next 3.5 weeks at home on reserve with my family and I see yall headed to the jumpseat room at midnight to spend 4 hours playing on your phone while hoping your 2 hour flight doesn't delay so you can get home for (almost) 2 days off before you have to commute back to work...

JackStraw 03-01-2023 02:43 PM

I could never imagine my kids growing up anywhere near Memphis. The suburbs are fine but eventually they’re going to be older and to want to drive into the city. The same city where there are no “good neighborhoods”. Memphis isn’t like other cities where there’s pockets of crime. There are over 170 gangs in Memphis and they’re EVERYWHERE. You or 16 year old kids cut off the wrong car on accident and you could find out the hard way in the form of a barrage of bullets. No, that’s not hyperbole. There’s a reason 70% of FedEx pilots commute.

Precontact 03-01-2023 02:58 PM

Wasn’t the home base originally going to be Little Rock?

Great. It really works out for me. I can't imagine my kids growing up in most of the places yall live either... With crazy taxes, horrible weather, insane costs of living, crime scenes that are just as bad on the wrong side of town, taking the dock in pay for waiting to upgrade until I can hold that double dead head that works me to exhaustion twice a month and most importantly me never being home to raise them. I guess I'll just have to explain to my 16 year old not to take the car cruising through Orange Mound to hang out with all the street gangs and FedEx commuters to avoid getting shot. Then again I grew up in Dallas and was smart enough to not go driving around South Oak Cliff for fun, so I've got some experience with what to tell them and I'll at least be home to explain things they need help with...

This particular shooting wasn’t in orange mound. It was in Sherwood Forest. Only two blocks from the University of Memphis campus.

I can’t say for sure where the other Memphis FedEx pilot was driving when he got shot..

BertMacklinFBI 03-01-2023 03:08 PM

Who cares. If you wanna live in memphis area go for it. If you wanna commute from Columbia. More power to ya. If you wanna live in a van down by the river….well…that’s up to you. I commute. I don’t wanna live in memphis but I am jealous of the locals commute. I think it makes some people feel better about the jumpseat lounge drool session to bag on memphis even if Memphis has a lot to bag on.

My doctor couldn’t believe it. So I sent him the document that listed all the information they wanted. He refused to write that note. He told me he would write a note and if it didn’t work to let him know so he could talk with them.

Hahaha I take the afternoon Jumpseat to Mobile about 50 minutes and the drive another 30 minutes to my home by the water. Hope you enjoy my hometown of Memphis but even this hometown guy left. I don’t have to gear up to simply go to town or drive to work everyday.

You're right. Memphis is awesome. Sorry.

You do know that we've all spent a lot of time there and that every one of us has always had the option to move there right?

I've worked at several airlines where no pilots were shot. Outliers I guess. We're now to 1/3000 at FDX (1/2000 if we count the pilot shot in IND) That number will certainly go up at some point. When you figure out how to get from your "huge house" to the airport at 3 am without running the gauntlet please pass your secret on to the rest of us.

In the meantime, let's just add this particular job hazard to the reasons we need to be PAID NOW!
