They only way to compare apples to apples is compare line pilots schedules. Not everybody can be on RSV in Memphis or a Flex. The day to day schedules are a bear. My commuter buddies knew that in the mid 90s and have endured a furlough or two but are now flying during the day with occasionally their families in the back to enjoy a nice layover.
New hires at DAL are getting wide body FO pay and can commute from home the day of a trip rather than coming in the day before. They can also under certain circumstances pull reserve from home....can't do that at fedex since they just assign you a hotel standby.

Yes DAL first year pay if the same regardless of A/C. Not sure but he may have meant that new hires are being awarded widebodies in initial training.

I am a very junior 757 FO. 100th percentile type. I bid and hold usually my 4-5th choice of A reserve. I live in Collierville and fly an average of 5 days a month. Mostly out and backs with an occasional day in a hotel. I can't remember the last time I flew on a weekend. The other 10 days of reserve are at home with my kids. Life is good... YMMV...

Everybody has their own bidding preferences. As for me ... I would typically bid every week on / week off daytime (not necessarily hub turning) line. Then I would bid daytime Reserve knowing it was likely that I could hold one of my first 3 Reserve choices.
I probably spent 5 years standing B Reserve from my crashpad in Germantown. I suspect that I submitted an R day move/drop almost every week for 5 years. I suspect that less than 3 (total!) were approved. I honestly believe that "DENIED INSUFFICIENT RESERVES" is the scheduling computer default and that it take fewer key strokes for the scheduler. I always wondered if they could hit, "RETURN, RETURN, RETURN, RETURN, RETURN" and have denied 5 pilots trip trade requests in less than 30 seconds?
I didn't really consider it a serious schedule adjustment tool. I even tried switching into days with less reserve coverage without success. I just assumed that part of the Contract was broken and bid assuming that I would actually have to be available for the days I was assigned.
You shouldn't have to use sick leave to adjust your schedule for family obligations?
