...and all I got was this lousy tee shirt!
For the last four years we've supported the union, we've stood on the picket lines, we've gone to rallies, we've worn the lanyards and all we have to show for it is this lousy TA?
This TA is clearly a win for the company and a loser for the pilot group. I don't buy the argument that the company put "real money" on the table. The $1.7 billion figure in the extra cost of this contract that the company and union both are throwing around is completely misleading and amounts to little more than cost of living increases for the last 4 years and the next 6 years. Has FedEx increased their rates over the last 4 years and will they continue to do so over the next 6? Of course. The $1.7 billion is simply the extra cost of doing business over a ten year span that gets passed on to the consumer.
Other than a pay bump, which is pretty much COLA and the signing bonus, which you only get part of right away, I haven't met many "yes" voters that can tell me why this TA is so wonderful and once implemented, how their working conditions, trips, or quality of life is going to be that much improved - a little at best.
I didn't wait 4 years for a little improvement and when you factor in status quo on the A Plan and no cash over cap on the B Plan, I consider this TA to be a big net loss to the pilots.
Most of the "yes" voters I've talked to are worried about what happens if we turn this down. First of all, the answer is nothing. We continue to operate under the same contract. Second, we continuing negotiating - hopefully with a new team. This hot tub style, let's everybody get along style of negotiating just doesn't work and the proof of that is the TA we just received. You have to get a little bit bloody in this kind of fight to get what you deserve and we haven't come close to getting that chance. I really think the union and the company both have underestimated the resolve of the pilot group. For those of you "yes" voters that are running scared and think this is the best we can do, here's a suggestion - grow a pair, grow a spine, grow something!
