What is a good school but also cheap to get bachelors and flight training? (Price)

 

I’m gonna assume you’re talking about 4 year colleges with part 141 aviation programs. This really depends on which state you live in. Out of state tuition can be pricey so I would recommend you look in state at first. Personally, I live in Arizona so I am eligible for WUE which is basically an out of state tuition discount for over 10 western states. This makes it affordable for me to go to UND. Flight costs are pretty average across universities ranging from 60-80k usually. Expect to spend at least 130k with tuition, flight costs, and dorms.

Alternatively, there are associates degree aviation programs to look at that cost about 60-70k. But again, you only get your associates and will likely want to transfer to finish your degree online. It’ll cost 20-30k to finish your bachelor’s degree. The total would be close to 100k. I personally have decided against doing this route because the degree problem.

Most the people on here are gonna say an aviation degree is useless and a bad idea. But at the end of the day, if you are young it is very advantageous and most likely the most efficient route to the airlines.

The two concepts "cheapest," and "least expensive," are not the same thing. One speaks to quality, the other to price.

You're not going to find the least expensive training at a college.

 

Check out Middle Tennessee State University, located in Murfreesboro, TN (about 45 minutes outside of Nashville).

Part 141 flight school, 4 year degree program with multiple aviation concentrations, R-ATP at 1,000 hours, and great college experience.

Flight training and tuition rates are reasonable compared to many other programs out there. If you happen to qualify for the academic common-market or scholarships it's even better.

Look at Louisiana Tech in Ruston, LA.

Part 141. AABI Accredited. R-ATP. 10 C-172 w/ G1000nxi. Two new Piper Arrows. They lease a Twin Comanche for the multi. The school constantly goes through instructor shortages to surpluses and this can be an issue if you're trying to get things done fast. They have a very picky enrollment process now. I'd schedule a tour for sure though. You can visit the website and get pricing. You'll graduate with a B.S. of Science in Professional Aviation and obtain a minor in Aviation Management. Has ties with Skywest, Mesa, ExpressJet and Cape Air. I hear RPA is working on something too. Ruston, LA is a great place to live and has a lot to do. The school itself is getting overcrowded. We just had our largest freshmen class yet. The atmosphere is fun and you'll get the "college experience" while you're here.

Middle Georgia State University. 4 year part 141 full restricted ATP. Brand new planes. top notch training. Very cost effective. Also part of Delta Propel.

 

Have you thought about doing the flight training at a community college? After you get finish the flight training and get your associates degree, you can work as a CFI and finish your bachelor's degree online. There are some very inexpensive online options that are from legitimate institutions. For example Chadron State College in Nebraska, which is part of the University of Nebraska system, does not charge out of state tuition for distance learning degrees. I have looked at doing a second bachelor's in mathematics through them and the costs would be less than $7,000 per year. Probably among the least expensive ways to complete flight training and obtaining a bachelor's degree.
