Question for the small FBO instructors, out there:
How do you track your student pilot lesson progress? We have several instructors, one airplane, and handing folks back and forth due to line flying can be frustrating.

I've tried the ASA folders, they seem to be overkill in some areas and weak in others. I've tried free form entries in student binders, and that works pretty well. Takes a lot of time, though. I'm still looking for the right answer.

What are you small FBO CFI's doing for ground lesson and flight lesson tracking?

I'm at a small mom and pop, but we don't normally "hand folks back and forth". There are times when I'm out of town that I'll ask another instructor if they would mind flying with my students while I'm gone. Some students are OK with it, others would rather just wait until I get back. In our FBO office there is a binder for each instructor. In the binder there is a divider with a syllabus for each of their students. Even though they could fly with different instructors, there is always a "primary" instructor and they are the ones who will solo the student or sign off for a checkride, etc. (unless the student would rather change primary instructors). There are different tasks with lines for student initials, instructor initials, and the date it was completed. Some tasks are not complete until the lesson is satisfactory and the student is proficient (steep turns), others are just a completion (night work). There are probably better methods out there, but this works for us.

 

Jeppesen syllabus available at every pilot shop.
Mark items off as completed.
Don’t need to be 141 to work as if you were.
If that makes sense.

 

I’m sure all the pre-written out syllabus folders are similar whether it be Jepp, ASA or whatever. I use Gleim and that works well

Flybub; sounds like a great idea, making a binder for each of us instructors, instead of each student, like I was trying to do. I'm trying to come up with a good checklist for tasks, as nothing I find seems to work right for our environment and teaching style.
