For what it's worth, I appreciate all of you speaking your minds. I was very close to moving into a program at DCA or ATP and trust me when I tell you....this is not the story they tell to people flasing $50-60,000 in their face.
Coming from a background of 13 years of sales and management in corporate America I know the game and after hearing the rose colored glasses version from the schools...I sought out opinions from this site AND my local FBO. All I can say is inspect what you expect and do it from every angle imaginable.

I agree. I don't want to say anything negative but the reality is that I almost quit flying because of DCA. Very expensive with very little concern for the student. I spent at least 3 times what I was quoted before pulling out. I will be starting training for a 121 where my classmates will be just starting their "standarizion" to be a CFI. It is up to you to chose your path. All I can say is don't fall for the carrot and stick.

Anything is better then DCA I went there and paid way too much for my private. I heard the other day from my instructor a kid came in who had 40 hours and still had not soloed. They are poor at trying to help you out when you aren't happy with your progression.

I am also glad I read this thread! DCA wasn't high up on my list but it was on there for potential schools and even though this isn't something some people want to hear, it sure is helpful to know these things before commiting to spend this type of money at a black hole.

FBOs are not a bed of roses either, but there is more parity between their cost and value of your tickets in todays market. It is foolish to spend $55k for training when $30 will do the trick, and an FBO may not be as slick or as fast, but when you are going to make $25k for several years in a row you will be darned glad you do not owe that extra money. Personally I do not see how anyone does it even using FBOs, but I guess they manage. That's about what I've got left over from engineering school, and you won't see me on the flight line for a while.

That sounds about right. I got up to CFI with tailwheel, hi perf., glass and multiengine-instr.-comm for about $27k. It took me a tad longer than academies, but I learned more about aviation in that time. I am not a fan of fast tickets.
