Great Minds think alike, Mr. Spooner!
That idea certainly has popped up in my mind, and to hear someone say they have seen that happen before is music to my ears. The thing is, I have to figure out what my "hook" is. I imagine that it's good for me to honestly and properly present myself as someone who is not just sitting around waiting for the call from an airline and then I'm gonna say "cya later..."
But the question is- will that be enough? As you say, they may need instructors badly, but I wonder just how bad.
I assume "That school" refers to the one whose "Daddy" sounds: not like Alpha, not like Bravo or Charlie, but sounds like @#$%^, right?

If you plan on training others to become CFI's, remember you need to have had your CFI for 2 years and also have 200 hours dual given. You will definately have trouble finding a flight instructor who meets those requirements that would be willing to work for a startup operation like that.

Either way, you'll have to shell out some money, sorry.

Cranford,

Due to the current (and growing) CFI shortage I think there is certainly a long-term niche for non-time-building CFI's in most areas. Also once you get some experience you can have your pick of instructing jobs and find a niche that you like...IFR, ME, TAA, Flight Reviews, Tail draggers, floats, etc.

The senior freelance instructors that I know can easily make a comfortable living if they want to do it aggressively full time. Or you could do it part-time for beer money.

Cranford I am doing the same thing myself - IT guy - bought my own plane - Just passed both writtens - and I live in Orlando as well.... Message me - we can collaborate.

One tip - I did my written ATP then the CFI 100 Q. test then the CFI FOM 50 Q test - a little rough with the ATP first - but made the CFI tests easy - do the training on the cfi - get the rating then do the ATP check ride...

You can do it before 1500 hrs no prob. and if you have the budget take the atp in a cool sim and get a type rating too.

My .02 worth

You have the right place..I do not think you need a hook, just talk to them.

Ok!- Great Point timnunes- this is the kind of stuff I hadn't thought of, you guys are giving me good food for thought. So- these newly minted CFIs that work for the 141 operations- they have to give instruction only to the new students, right? the ones that are working toward private and/or commercial? That's not too bad- I would enjoy working with that target area of students.
When you say "find and instructor willing to work for a start up", do you mean the 2nd instructor i would try to hire (as Cubdriver suggests)?

Hey Flying Dog- thanks for the info! Wanna hear what you bought. How do I collaborate? don't I need a minimum number of posts or something? when I try to look at peoples profiles, I get blocked out.

i dont understand the concern for money spent on the CFI training? so little compared to what you make.

aviation is a great hobby , a hard job to make a living, try to remember the reasons you stopped flying in the 90's, are those reasons still valid? have u considered just buying a fun plane and enjoying retirement?
