Average Plane rental fee?

i pay 115 for PI 21-151 1977, plus $40 instructor fee.

I could get piper tomahawk (around 90-100 as i remember), but thats a very tight plane for me

I paid $55 for a C-172 wet at the Yokota Aero Club in the late 90s. When I left Travis the rental rate was around $65-70 for a C-172. Not sure what the rental rate is at the USNA Aero Club or Andrews...

I've done an extensive search for the best place to start. I've found that most of the Military Flying Clubs charge $75-$79/hr wet and $25/hr instructor. Don't know if I want to go Part 61 or 141 though. Eglin AFB is 141 but to drive that far 3 times a week for several weeks isn't that conducive either. However, The club in PNS (Part 61) is charging an $800 initiation fee....... Jax has a $50 fee but is....well, in Jax. I'm still in P-cola for another year. I suppose I could go ahead and pay the expensive initiation fee and at least knock out the Private, if not more, over the next 12mos. Just hate to pay for that new hangar on PNS but I suppose someone has to.

I know this sounds crazy, but you can finance a plane for 20 years (1970 or better) and your payments would be about $250 per month. (about 30K)

Insurance on a student pilot roughly $1200 a year.

If you went in with partners all the better - 3 guys get their ratings - build some time and sell the a/c.

I did this with a 150 (purchased for 15K) got like 600 hours (had a auto gas stc and fuel was like 1.40 - 2.20 per gal) and with every thing - including 11K I put in it.

When I sold it after accounting for every thing - 600 hours cost me like $16.41 per hour.

I now have a C172 1970 K Model (probably going to sell it to go to a flying job) but it is costing me around 48 - 65 and hour - I probably got 3 - 400 hours in it. (C172K's are my favorite - they have one of the highest useable load I could find 918#).

I only wish I would have not let people talk me out of buying an Apache 150 that was sweet - bad divorce sale 50K - I would have a lot more multi than now but a lot less total...

Just an idea for those who want to be creative.

$124/hr + fuel surchage and $55/hr for CFI

$75 for a Cherokee or 172, $115 for a 172 SP and $175 for a Duchess out of Plus One flying Club in San Diego. Instructors run between $25-50. Monthly dues are around $25 but compared to some other places you could easily make this back on the cost of a few rentals.

best part is 24hr access to the planes through online scheduling and one-key-fits all.

I flew out of 24R and Ferguson during my CFI-A. Love that grass strip!

Hey usmc maybe you can answer this for me. Where exactly does all of that $55/hr for the CFI go? If they only pay you $15/hr out of that where does the other $40 go?

I'm not complaining here, just curious what all has to be paid for from the instructor rate.

The student pays $55 I get $22 so where the other $33 goes, your guess is as good as mine.

Think of it in these terms...I have say round it down to 700 hours of dual given that is in just MY dual given time alone made them $23,100 and has made me $15,400 before taxes. So with those kinds of margins in their favor why do I get treated like the lowest end of the totem pole in the company? Typical CFI job I guess


LAFF this is when you say something in your infinite wisdom about in your vast experience you have found that FBOS are out to ruin aviation and that one day the clouds opened up and the sun shone down from the heavens and god said "let there be ATP!!"

Nah, that's not just an FBO thing. As far as I can tell every flight school charges a lot more for an instructor than they actually pay the instructor. Maybe the money goes toward the instructors insurance? Or insurance for the plane? Or perhaps that is just how they make their money.
