To my knowledge if your CFI cert. has expired you must take a practical test for one of the ratings held on your CFI cert. currently. You may not at this point take like a CFII checkride if you aren't a CFII to renew it. This only works if you are still current.

Let me get this straight: If I add an Ground instructor certificate to my license, it counts as a renew? Damn, all I have to do is take those stupid writtens again! I knew it was a good idea not get those damn things while I got my CFI-A and CFI-I! Now I can use that as an excuse to renew!

Not quite. A ground instructor is a different certificate. I believe slice was refering to a glider add-on.

You are correct.

Good link regarding CFI renewal. However, going back to the original question in the thread. Only item 1 and 2 will work once your certificate has expired.

Yeah, well keep it in mind for next time. Very easy to keep current but a pain if you let it lapse.
