DME Approach
 

I remember during my instrument training that there are a few locations that have DME arc approaches... does anyone know where those are? I am just curious and would like to fly a few in my FRASCA 141 time. Thanks!

Sorry, I meant DME-Approach.... DME only. Not like VOR/DME or LOC/DME... its a DME arc to the runway/missed approach. So basically you descend along the arc and the end of the arc should be the runway.

Oh, I think I heard of that like 30 years ago. I've never seen one in real life or heard of it since. Maybe somebody else knows.

DME is on the way out. Nevertheless, I think there are a few places in Northern New York that have 'em. I'll have to check my charts and let you know.

there's one in maryland..don't remember where..but look at the MD plates and you'll find it (it's nearish to the coast)

It was listed as a VOR/DME... I thought it would have just been listed as DME. Either way, thats a crazy approach and the hold is even crazier.

The DME could be associated with a VOR or an ILS, so having VOR in the title is necessary to make the distinction. Furthermore, the VOR radials define points (SLOAF, CUMBE, GOVES, a "VDP", and the MAP) that are required for the approach and for the Missed Approach Procedure.

By "hold is even crazier" I assume you mean the Missed Approach holding pattern. The holding pattern itself is quite standard -- along a radial of the VOR. Perhaps you're referring to the Missed Approach Procedure routing itself, which includes a segment defined by a VOR/DME arc. While uncommon, I don't believe they are unusual.

Flying an arc (without an FMS) is becoming a lost skill. If there's a way to practice it, do it! :)

It's my opinion that everyone should, every once in awhile if able, do a DME arc over a VOR. I'd have to check, but I THINK South Bend, IN has a DME arc approach.

We have DME arcs all over here. Shelbyville, Chattanooga, Gallatin, and Lebanon all have DME arcs that lead onto a radial for final approach. The Lebanon arc is actually the 27 DME arc from BNA VOR so that's never fun if you do the full approach.
