i also miss Whiteys....... and Stormy's and the Down UNDer, and the Rock, and Muddy's, and the Babylon, and the Parrots Kay, and the Cuckoo's Nest, and Judy's, and Suite 49. I think there are some in there that I don't remember. Go figure that one out.

I swear I went to class somewhere in between all that.

Go Sioux

"Back in my day" In addition to the classics you mentioned. We were quite fond of Bonzers (pre-flood), The Antiuqe, there was a place called the "Back Door" for a few years. The Westward Ho...aka..."The Ho", Faces, The Blue Moose...When it was a "Gentlemans club". Jonesy's/The Edge

I too have forgotten a few. I can see them in my mind, but can't remember the names. There was a county bar on the south side of the down town...kind of near The plain Brown Rapper and another country place out of town a ways...My liver hurts thinking about it now!

Dido...graduate 99 with a flood. Does any one remember 42nd Street Eatery and their exploded pig and mud pie? In addition to cheap beer.

exxcalibur11 12-19-2007 09:41 AM

Thanks Wingnut

i knew someone would jog my memory. Great times were had at Bonzers,(home of the schooner), the Blue Moose, and the Edge.

What a great college and bar town

Heck yeah... just about the only place in town to get decent BBQ. At least until the owner moved it down to the south side of town and set the place on fire...

I heard the owner lost the restaurant in a divorce settlement and the wife took it to 32nd ST. If the rumor is true that she set the place on fire for an insurance payout she did everyone a favor by putting the place to rest as the food was horrible.

FlyerJosh 12-22-2007 06:46 PM

The food when it was on 42nd street was good- but once the restaurant moved, it sucked...

I do miss evenings at Bonzers and the occasional nice dinner at Sanders.

coldpilot 12-22-2007 08:05 PM

Anyone ever go for steaks at the Bronze Boot? Very pricey on the college budget but great food. Make up for what you spent there by going to the DownUnder for $1.50 pitchers!

I worked nights as a waiter at the northern location when it first opened up because I could not make ends meet on my miniscule wages as a UND CFI ($12.50/hr If I recall) I transfered to the owners other place..."Players" to bartend before "42nd street" moved south.

Fly/sim/brief all day, then go work 6 more hours till 11 or 12 at night. Get up at 6:00am and do it all again. Living the pilot dream!!!!!

Cr@p! Now I think about it...not much has changed. I'm still working two jobs. Only this time I've got the airline job, but fly in the USAF Reserves to make ends meet. Huh, funny. The more things change the more they stay the same. Living the pilot dream!!!!!!

Blue Moose was a strip club? Was it in the same "lodge style" building?

wingnutC-17 01-21-2008 06:46 AM

I can't remember if it was a full time thing or a one day a week thing, or a one time good deal, but I just remember when it first opened up, it was originally intended not to be the family friendly place as it is now. The original Blue Moose concept was very short lived. I remember my friends saying the girls (waitress/dancers) were wearing g-strings and pasties, as bare anything is not alowed in E.G.F. It's a little hazy, but I think the original only lasted a few weeks/months before it was closed/shut down and started up in the form it is today.

wingnutC-17 01-21-2008 06:51 AM

Actually, I'll e-mail a few of my friends that were "coneseurs" of the Grand Forks bar scene in the early 90's and see what they can remember. Just to get the record straight.

Class of 07. BTW, left the caribbean for DEN (and it is snowing as I type). I wanna go back there and fly some T-props.

AirSioux 01-24-2008 02:33 AM

I'm a UNDer...F-in winter...good performance tho

wingnutC-17 01-24-2008 09:08 AM

Ok, I have checked with my sources and confirmed the history of the Blue Moose.

It was originally a bar called the "Great Northern" that struggled and never made any money. In a last ditch effort to bring in coustomers, it went topless. (as topless as you legally can E.G.F, MN....aka..."pasties") That business plan did not work either. It was soon sold to new owners and re-opened as what we all know as the Blue Moose.

So now you know...
Put that away in the useless trivia file.

Ramprat 01-24-2008 07:55 PM

You can find me waving to (or flipping off) Sioux planes over at the Northwest ramp...as well as flying them. I think Belliot can vouch for that eh?

Me Fly Airplane 02-01-2008 03:07 PM

I am yet another grad '01 who had the honor of knowing FlyerJosh.

Sorry to hear about the windchills last week in GFK. At least the snow should start to melt in another few months!

Are the rumors true with regards to a King Air, Mustang and two Diamond Jets? Are they being used like the two Beechjets 400A's were for the China guys named Roy, Chuck, George and the other american names they choose?

What's the fleet like now?

AirSioux 02-02-2008 04:05 PM

Yeah the rumors are true, I have to walk by the King Air every morning on my way out to Bravo apron, it sucks..the mustang is on its way, and haven't heard anything about the Diamond Jets but it wouldn't suprise me if those are on the way now too. Rumor has their trying to land an Army contract which would bring in a few more King Air's. As of now we are on pipers mainly...Warrior III's both 6 pack and Glass with the entegra...Arrows for 323, Seminole's for 325, and then option of doing CFII in the cirrus or on the glass warriors... They equipped the entire fleet with ADS-B as a test bed for the FAA and the thing is pretty sweet. The chopper guys have schweizers (sp?) and a few Jetrangers...still got the decath's for aerobatics and the top cub for float...would love to stay but the Sioux are playin the U of Minnesota golden weenies tonight...we beat'm last night in OT were 3rd in the country right now! happy flying

av8or91 02-02-2008 06:20 PM

The kingair is only being leased and is only used for the air china students. I have also heard the mustang and the 2 D-jets will be here sometime in march but who knows with two brand new aircraft just starting production.

Which type. Thanks for the info guys. CLAU, STRE or Larry R. flying the with the China folk?

GFKFLYER 02-04-2008 06:25 PM

It is a King Air 200, they were looking at leasing a 90 but found this instead. CLAU, JPAL (Jeff Palmer), and RCAR (Ryan Carlson) are flying the King Air right now. The Mustang is supposed to be here in Oct and the D-Jets are supposed to be after that. There is also plans in the future to buy a King Air depending on the length of the contract with Air China.

Hoffer802 02-06-2008 10:04 AM

Hey guys maybe this topic can help answer a few questions (please no flaming ><). So I am currently enrolled at the ERAU Prescott Campus, and truth be told I am hating it. I have been seriously considering transferring to UND after the end of this semester and was wondering if I could get some insight on the school.

Seeing as many of you are post graduates, was it easy to find jobs in the industry upon graduation? Does UND have a lot of internship and co-op programs available to the students? Also, is it possible to fly through the school while doing an non-flight related degree program? And if so, is it possible to get flight costs covered under school tuition so that student loans may be used?

Please I am hoping to avoid sprouting a flame war between the two schools and would just like some facts from past students and I thank you all for taking the time to read this.
