Classs D Airspace and transponder
HI,
I notice some D airspace with radar and some without. How do we identify which D airports are equipped with radar?
Is it that only D airspace with radar are those within 30 miles radius from Bravo airspace? So can D airports have Radar outside of that 30 mile from Bravo? is so how do we identify?
Also similar question, do all Delta airport within 30 mile radius from Bravo have radar? in another word, it it required for that airport?
thanks!

no, not all deltas within 30 miles of a bravo have radar... although some of them use a radar feed from the bravo just as an extra resource for them in the tower. and no, some delta's outside a 30 mile radius from a bravo can also have radar...
i'm not sure if you even can identify it from any charts/facility dir... i think you just kinda find out when you get there and remember for future reference.
i know around where i fly there are two deltas less than 7 miles from eachother, both outside 30 miles from the bravo, one of them has radar and the other doesnt.

I'd agee with mcartier. Most of the Class-D's that have it are bootlegged scopes in the towers, they can't do anything as far as vectors and clearances to what they see in that scope, it's strictly referential for them. The most I've heard one tower do with it is identify someone that was lost in reference to the airport. They told him "if he headed south" he should see the airport in 12 miles. Like I said, they can't give "vectors" or any clearance in reference to that scope.

My guess it just to look at an AFD and see if there is an approach freq listed. I'm always afraid of flying into a Class D and calling the tower while just completely blowing off approach if they had one, even though I think its just for traffic separation while VFR?

TRSA's I know of: Travis AFB, CA (SF Bay Area), Altus AFB, OK...I'v seen a couple of civilian airports with TRSA's on a chart somewhere but don't remember where. I think a better way to phrase it is that TRSA's have their own approach control (and thus, radar) but are not Class C...you're also not required to contact approach when transiting the grey box, but you're a complete idiot if you don't (thank God I had TCAS at Altus, I wonder why someone thinks its a good idea to squawk 1200 and blow through a military traffic pattern without talking to anyone). Ask for a tour of the tower at your local Class D airport to see what a bootlegged Class B radar looks like.
