Multi Checkride

Gear down 10 knots too fast on the single-engine ILS.....busted! ****!

Any words of encouragement, or similar experiences?

Don't do the same thing next time.

Learn from your mistake :)

Well now you have a chance to go back and make sure you understand cockpit flows better. My guess is either you got distracted and forgot your flow, or do not really have the flow down. I always ask myself "am I below x knots" before I swing the gear lever down, but just do whatever flow your instructor uses and you will pass on the second try. The gear should not drop at too high a speed because the doors could get ripped off and the actuator could get bent. I do not know if that would really happen but Piper and Beechcraft think so, so you're going to have to do it correctly to pass.

I did it passing over the OM, such a dumb thing to do, just got distracted with cleaning up the engine and maintaining the GS and LOC. Worried too much about performance....

It was left engine inop., so I also got distracted pulling the handle and explaining pumping.

Anyways, enough excuses, I just know for damn sure I won't make the same mistake, just taking it pretty hard. Passed my commercial ASEL 10 days ago, and I'm not even 141. Probably could have waited a few more days.

I understand. My multiengine instrument commercial checkride took place during deteriorating mvfr conditions and strong winds. I had to stomp the left rudder pedal to get the airplane to line up on the approach with a dead right engine and a stiff component from the left. If I had not eased off on the left throttle a good bit I would not have been able to get enough rudder authority to make the approach. It was a real challenge and I was relieved to pass on the first try, it could have gone the other way.

Well, I guess that was as bad as forgetting the "before takeoff checklist" on the initial MEI.

Maybe you can make it a habit to check that you are below the limit speeds before changing config. Say it in your head "gear down, checked below __kt"

I always have my students say "Below 140, gear coming down." They then can move the switch. Touch, say, and do, just like the engine-out procedure.

That is what is weird, I'm a fairly verbal pilot, be it thinking out loud or going through memory items or checklists, I am pretty good at saying and doing. I need to work on speaking through EVERYTHING no matter how big or small, that will definately help.
