I notice IFR charts have ARTCC boundries depicted. Why? I mean why is this important for us pilots? If this is due to inform us of the proper frequency, I don't see how depicting one frequency by the boundry will help when the size of each ARTCC is huge...some larger than several States. If there are more than 1 ARTCC frequencies depicted in each given ARTCC area, I ask the first question again, why is knowing where the boundry line then important to pilots?

I'm on a roll with all the questions today. Thanks all for answering.

ATC forgot to hand me off one time while in IFR and moderate turbulence. I didn't notice until I couldn't understand the controller's transmissions anymore. So here I am flying along in the soup with nobody watching my back. I found a frequency on the chart and contacted a controller who could locate my position and help me find the correct controller. That's reason enough for me. Of course that was early on in my flying. Today I don't make that trip.

I never saw much reason for the boundaries other than stated above in case there is a reason to contact someone. But it's a good habit to start noticing these things - once you start flying internationally you will use boundaries on a daily basis; sometimes there are even requirements before crossing boundaries. My recommendation - keep those charts open

Patton hit the nail, you have to put at least one fix in each zone. Can't find a reference on it though.

Cubdriver -

I knew this applies to my regs for filing TACANs with 250 miles of a center boundary but I didn't know it applied to GPS too. If you come aross the reference - please post.

Well, I guess is a way to let pilots know when to expect a handoff. Anyhow, is better to have them just if.....#$%^ hits the fan.

Practically though, I just file direct, and I've never had a problem. And I don't do small legs, Indiana-Florida a lot, and out west, etc.. Maybe I'm just lazy, but no one's questioned it either. I'm a duats.com user also, and it does put a Lat/Long in for some airports, but not intermediate places within.
