Airline Dispatch
With the airlines not hiring so much I'm thinking about trying out dispatch. Does anyone know anything about the job? day to day stuff... Pay, if I do go with this and get a job will I get laid off like the pilots or will it be more secure of a job? Thanks for any info!

I have an Aircraft Dispatch Certificate in addition to all my flight certificates and types. It cost approximately 7K and if you go to most airlines the pay starts at 10-12.00 and hour. Usually, you need to start small airlines before any larger 121 will consider you. Another possibility is to start in scheduling or some other capacity and transfer into the slot if it's offered internally. You do learn a lot about weather, reports, duty rules, ETOPS and the obvious flight planning. You usually have to learn how to do it all manually, just an EGB and pocket calculator for the practical test. The written is just a retake of the ATP.

Think about it. If "X" number of flights are cut so you don't need "Y" number of pilots, what are "Z" number of dispatchers going to do? Got my AD years back for free, no GS required, just take the written and practical based on being "PIC of an aircraft over 600 HP." When the folks at the FSDO asked what type of aircraft, I pulled out out my certificate with a DC-3 type rating. Never really used the AD, but it's still there if I need it.

I did mine on the 727-200! I remember Detroit FSDO Guy....his name was Robert...can't think of his last name but he's a real stickler on weather. But he asked me, what's the most important thing you do on the walk around? I said, "Make sure the DB Cooper Switch works!"
