The mom and pop route is exactly the route you should have taken. This is a terrible time to be a pilot. Be happy you have a job, degree, and low debt. Get your CFII and MEI and continue instructing like most us had to do in the "old days". Most of these young guys have had it too easy, they don't know what it is like to be in a bad economy with no flying jobs. Some of them are starting to learn though. Patience is what it is going to take if you want to make it. I had all my ratings at 21 and didn't get hired at an airline until I was in my late 20's. Time to buck up!

Going military might not be a bad idea right now. I got off of active duty this past June and now I am looking to temporarily activate for a year to hold me over. Got my CFI/ CFII and MEI but only one student (and anyone else I can fly with temporarily). Unfortunately it's bad out there right now. At least I can keep flying on the side for the next year, just grateful to have a fall-back.

I'm already in my late 20's and too old for the military. In this situation I'm trying to build time as fast as I can but am finding it difficult via the mom and pop. I'm not complaining about instructing, I'm just having a difficult time finding a more agressive instructing job, thus am considering the CFII/MEI to open up the horizons.

I understand not wanting to go in the military, but just so you know, your information is incorrect on the age thing. You can still get into military aviation in your late twenties, you would just have to get an age waiver, and it would be approved.

I'll agree with that, especially with the CFII. The MEI on the other hand, I dunno. At my club to instruct in the twin you needs gobs of total time (I think at least 1000hrs), and multi time (I think at least 250hrs). So getting a MEI right now for me would not be practical if I were to stay where I am. (you have to love insurance!)
We all have to keep in mind that right now is just a hard time. People ( who are looking at flying for pleasure) are not willing to part with their money easily, and when your instructing gig is out of a flight club, and not a flight school its not easy finding students.
