The OSU?

I know the OSU has a flight program, but I couldn't find any information about working there. Any leads, anyone?

They have a pretty good program. I went to a rival program in Michigan although I competed against OSU on flight team.

Here is there site: Department of Aviation - The Ohio State University

If you are looking for somewhere to earn a degree and flight instruct try Western Michigan Univ.

Is OSU connected to Sporty's Academy?

waflyboy 01-30-2009 05:59 PM

Oregon State U has a flying club as well.... although I don't think a formal aviation program.

No. Sporty's works with the University of Cincinnati.

"The" Ohio State University. The school insists on this title; the rest of the country sighs and giggles.

As an Ohio State Aviation Alumni, I would honestly look elsewhere for an aviation degree. If you are from Ohio, I would try Ohio University. Their program seems to be a lot nicer then ours. In the Midwest, I would also look into Western Michigan and Purdue.

My logic is this......I graduated in 2002 and the program hasn't changed at all. I ended up getting a degree in Aviation Management due to the cost of flight school. I got all my certificates at a Part 61 school (spent $25,000 for everything up to CFI and Multi) at Bolton Field. I have friends that did their flying at OSU and graduated with just a Commercial Certificate and maybe a Multi. Most other schools will get you through your MEI and maybe some sim time in an old 727 (Purdue) or equivalent. Some other schools even have a King Air that you might be able to fly (again Purdue from what friends have told me and maybe OU). The best thing you can do is compare the coursework at each school which is generally available on their department website. This will give you an idea of how in depth each program goes into.

Honestly, I would major in something other than aviation. I know you've probably have read this a million times on this board. I would suggest business or engineering. Currently I'm furloughed and it's been really tough finding something outside of aviation. (Nothing like being 29 and having to move back in with the Mom)

Now about OSU. I don't regret one minute of my time there and really enjoyed the Big Ten experience.

Feel free to PM me with any other questions.

Go Buckeyes!

Bryan

I believe Eddie George started when he was in the NFL. They would show the starting line up and each player would state the school he came from.

Most schools begin with "the". Such as The University of Michigan. For some reason it just took off when he said it. I'm still on the fence about it.

I've got one son who was just graduated from Purdue, and another boy at Ohio University (OU). Neither was / is in aviation, but I'll chime in and say that they are both fine choices. Despite my wisecrack above, I'll say the same for "The" OSU. I'll also say it's better, IMHO, to get an "outside" degree and get your ratings "on the side". BUT ...

my oldest son's degree is in in Mechanical Engineering and he might well be furloughed from Cessna soon (as an engineer), so you're not going to be immune from our Rock 'n Roll economy no matter what you do. Then again, he's got plenty of options - as a pilot with an aviation degree you will not have many. AND, by the time you're out and ready to go we might be in a boom time again. Who knows? Keep your health good, your options open, and do what you really want. If you get those covered everything else will work out. :)

I live near Cincinnati, safely away from campus but still full of those annoying alumni. :D The school administration would make noise whenever someone would refer to the school without using the "The". Very "affected" - as if they are the only university in Ohio. Many of the 'all-stars' now use "The" when they recite the school name on TV, etc. Ohio University (actually the first university in Ohio, IIRC) came out with a t-shirt that says "Ohio, THE State University".

My comments above are a dig at the administration only. It's a fine school overshadowed (to its detriment, I think) by a successful football team. :)

Here is the FBO that does training at KOUS

Capital City Aviation

crewdawg 01-31-2009 07:35 AM

Check out Kent State, they have a decent program. I looked at all the programs in Ohio and ended up going to Kent. Ohio U. has a very nice program but you are going to pay for it......that place is $$$$$. B.G. seemed like a dying program and was too close to home. I would have loved to have gone to Ohio State (I bleed Scarlett and Grey) but their program just didn't seem that great.

I'm going to preface this with, I am a Buckeye all the way.....but in reference to the OSU vs. THE OSU.....I've got nothing, I think it's lame as well! Although I love when people whine about it...

Hey...if your looking for a small, tight knit, and extremely effective flight school I would check out University of Cincinnati. Honestly the only thing that UC has to do with he program is giving you a diploma with their name on it and supplying a classroom. As far as your flight training and classroom time everything, and i mean everything is done by Sporty's (aside from like math classes and other required classes.).

They have a very nice facility and a small student body which helps when figuring out flight blocks etc. and everyone knows each other. It's not actually based at main campus its based at UC Clermont campus and clermont county airport (I69). The FBO is Sporty's corporate HQ/warehouse so when you have to buy stuff it's litterally down the hall to your right. You can also get a job working for them and get 50% off on all their merchandise.

You can start from scratch and be at CPL w/ ASEL/AMEL/CFI/II within two years if you try hard enough. The degree is an accociates of Aviation Technology but the nice thing is you can take a business option and transfer right down to main for a BA. If business isn't your thing you can always figure out a different route to take for a Bachelor...I know a couple people go to ERAU which is like 20 minutes north and finish up there for a Bachelor in aviation or even go to main for w/e they want.

If I was you i'd start comparing rental prices at the different schools your looking at...I've heard of some colleges charging as much as $200 an hour for a 152 which is insane.

As far as OSU i have a lot of friends that go up their and love it, It's a fun town. the other nice thing is that they are located on a towered field which is nice for the experience... it also has 4 runways so you'll always have a chance for a xwind take off. OU is a good school, kind of expensive and not much to do except drink. Seriously i know alot of people that have come back b/c their livers could not handle it. But Halloween is rated like #3 college party in the US...It's a blast but like I said everyone i've talked to friends who go their and they said all they do is drink every night. Their airfield is nice, it's a single RR Class Echo airport with an ILS.

WMU is a really really good aviation school, they kick ass every year at NIFA and they fly Cirrus's that were donated by Northwestern I believe...may be wrong about that but who cares they still fly Cirrus's and they are nice as hell. I think they have about 4000 aviation student's in various fields. Kent State is another school i'd look at.

hope this helps, if you have more questions about UC feel free to PM me...

Lol....Rotor, did not mean to insinuate that you were. I meant more my friends that I have to deal with on a day to day basis, Penn State/Clemson/Auburn guys. It doesn't bother me because I think it's dumb myself, but it allows for me to mess with my friends. :D

To the OP....go visit them all and make your own decision. You will get a better feel for what you like by visiting the school yourself.

Just remember to ask the most important question, "what is the girl/guy ratio at your college?"

MUSEIC: Been to OU for Halloween twice.....Kent is better!

No, no - no offense taken. BTW, OP has dived for cover. Might never see the guy again. After a dose of us, he's decided on accounting. Smart.

I would be banned from the site if I posted them! ;)

BTW, Rotor....dig the signature line. Don't have my rating but is on the top of list when I get back from training. Also, as you can see I really didn't learn much at school, so it fits me pretty well!

I had toyed with the things for some time, but finally finished using Sporty's motorglider. It's not as fun as "real" gliding, but it gets the job done and was convenient. To keep on topic, I don't know if it's on UC's syllabus, but you never know. In any case you use the same facilities and instructors.

Convairator 02-01-2009 06:14 AM

Recent Alumni of 'The' Ohio State University, and I would have to say that I have no regrets of attending there whatsoever. Absolutley a great school, great flying opportunities in Columbus, and also, good internship and networking opportunities with all the corporate and GA in and around the city, and probably the best town to be in when college football season rolls around.

However, if you want to be a pilot by going there, become a pilot. BUT, do not get a degree in aviation. I know I am driving home 10,000 other peoples voices here, and I wish I would have listened before I got my degree (aviation management) . Get a degree in Business, Finance, Education, Engineering, etc. All airlines want to see is a degree, doesnt need to be aviation. Outside of this industry, your aviation degree is toilet paper with a picture frame around it. Fly on the side, get your ratings, and get a useful degree, then get your flying job! O-H-I-O

were in the process of allowing multi-engine and glider training count towards the commercial rating, i think they are talking with FAA now i'm not too sure...

Thank you very much!!! Actually yes indeed, that photo was taken by our mechanic while we were on takeoff out of TJBQ (BQN-Aquadilla, Puerto Rico) enroute to Port of Spain (TTPP). Great airplane to fly, really a hands on airplane, no autopilot, very powerful with those old Allison engines. I actually gained the opportunity to fly for that company (who was recently shut down by the Funny Acronymn Association) while at T-OSU. Great flying, great airplane

I think I saw that airplane while in PR. I've always loved the old Convairs. Any Convair - 240, 340, 440, 580, 640, 880, 990. They built airplanes with Man Law in mind. Cherish that experience. I almost flew one in the mid 90s for a freight carrier out of Detroit but then I landed a regional job and the rest is history.

Thanks for the all the replies. I already have my degree (got suckered at humpdy diddle airplane school) and full time instructing there. I just was thinking about jumping ship to the OSU, because my brother currently goes there so we could share an apartment...... oh and also mid western girls and 'the real college experience' I missed out on

No the Cirri at WMU were not donated, and no the college does not have 4000 students more like 700 give or take 200. Still a great program though, being a product may have to do with what I think of it.

woodfinx 02-04-2009 01:54 PM

Anyone know if OSU made NIFA Nationals...i'd heard rumor that they got nudged out

EDIT: Nevermind, I looked and confirmed the rumor

ysslah 02-05-2009 07:29 AM

NIFA is becoming a cluster donkey show. In some ways it reminds me of FIA (The organization that is in charge of Formula 1 racing).

Nav isn't even Nav anymore..... Nav is now who can run a stopwatch and GPS.... Sad

I don't exactly mind. But yes, old way was more fun

fltjunkie 02-06-2009 01:43 AM

Ysslah

Graduate of The Ohio State University, and ditto what everyone else said about the college experience at the "crown jewel of NCAA". High Street on game day and just about every Fri & Sat nite is like going fishing with dynamite, tons of hot coeds who like to party.

Can't speak to the school of aviation first hand, but had a few friends go thru the program. The results are as varied as the people. Some are flying big iron for the man, and some are flying the unemployment line.

I'd honestly recommend working on a MBA or other Masters program (journalism, poli sci, computer something or another, whatever) and joining AF ROTC. Know a few guys who went that route and now fly for Uncle Sam either in Guard or Active Duty. I chose the AD route and its been great thus far.

On the flying side of things, consider carefully...DAB is a lot different than OSU wx wise, but the planes still fly. If you're used to severe clear then maybe the miserable ovc cigs at 1000 will be a problem for your transition.

Cheers

fj

BTW, did you guys know our football team is undefeated since 1926? :)
