Not to mention the fact that it's hard finding business when you don't own an airplane.
I was independent for a while. The money was good when I got it, but since I don't have my own plane, or ties with any clubs, it was hard finding students that owned an airplane.
That said though, one shouldn't settle working for a place that only pays $13 per hour.

I'm affiliated with a flight school and paid as an independent contractor. This is my first CFI job, so I don't have expierence as a CFI employee. It seems like being an employee might be simplier for the CFI in a lot of record keeping aspects, but I think being an independent contactor worked out better for me this year as far as income taxes go.
