296 does the car also but it's limited bu the units' memory capacity, so you can't load the whole country. Part of my trip planning for cross-country planning to other areas was ti load the local roads.

Smartphone avoids all that now.

I have a 500. I think people don't sell them because they don't want to make enemies. The 500 had a known defect - locked up whenever it felt like. Lowrance's customer service response to a known defect in their product? "We'll sell you another one."

Lowrance v. Garmin?

The guy that I work for gave me a Garmin 560 to use, it's really pretty cool... all the bells and whistles of color maps, airport diagrams, XM weather, etc... and when you get in a rental or crew car it switches over to "car" mode... which is just like a normal car GPS telling you what restaurants/hotels are around. It's a little expensive to buy personally, but pretty cool. I think the Garmin 500 is cheaper because it doesn't have the XM weather.
