I'm having a bit of a dilemma as I'm presently preparing for my CFIA written. My school used to use the GLEIM software however this year someone had the bright idea to switch to ASA and I hate it. It doesn't have half the features, for example. If you get a question wrong it doesn't fully explain (most of the times) why your answer is wrong. It just points you to the right answer!?

Anyways my point of this inquiry was to see if anyone out there is presently planning to buy the software and wanted to go half-n-half. Or, might have bought it and has an extra key that there willing to give in exchange for compensation of course , (or give for free out of the goodness of your heart ). If not whats the cheapest legal way to attain the software, as I am like most of us out here a broke college flight student.

I used the Gleim test prep book and the ASA computer software for all my writtens. I only used the ASA software because thats all my school offered. Ive never used the Gleim software, so I cant give an opinion on it, but I can tell you the Gleim test preps are more for PASSING the test, not knowing the information. Its for people who use rote memory and memorize the answers. Im sure this is why the software doesn't give any explanations.

If you want explanations and dont want to look it up yourself or buy the ASA software, get the book. It has them all in there. Go through the book once, highlight all the right answers, then go through all the questions on the software, marking all the ones you get wrong. Then go back through the wrong ones a few times till you have none marked and you will be fine.

Here's a tip: If your taking your CFIA, take the AGI at the same time. Its practically the same test. Depending on your DPE for the checkride, if you have an AGI, they wont test you on FOI stuff in your oral. Takes about an hour or so off the oral ground, and it might be worth it to spend the extra $100. Plus you can get your gold seal later.

Does a CFII need an AGI test? If he is going for the CFI written wouldn't the next logical test be the CFII written not the AGI (assuming he is going forward with CFII)?

No, a CFI or CFII do not need the AGI test. It can be used by people who are not going to get a CFI but still want to teach ground classes. If you think you might someday want the AGI, just take it the same time as the CFI because its practically the same test.
